Cross Listing of Courses

This process is intended for (1) courses offered by two or more departments or programs that are cross-listed and designated "same as" each other; or (2) for courses offered by one department that are given another prefix and title and counted as the same course by another department. It applies to (1) courses cross-listed within a single school; and (2) courses cross-listed between two or more schools.

Approval Process—A department or program wishing to initiate a cross-listing should complete the following process:

1. Chairs or program coordinators should send proposals requesting "same as" cross-listing and the addition of courses to their curriculum to their dean and appropriate school curriculum committee. Proposals should include:

a. Full information about the course.

b. An explanation of the place of the course in their curriculum.

c. Justification for adding the course.

d. A statement of endorsement by their department, the department in which the course is currently offered, and the "outside" dean if another school is involved.

2. The following steps or assurances must be observed:

a. Approval by departmental and school curriculum committees involved in the cross-listing.

b. Approval by the respective chairs and deans.

c. Courses involved should be essentially the same as each other.

d. Course titles should be essentially the same, but not identical.

e. Either the prerequisites for both courses should be the same or full justifications must be provided for having different prerequisites for each. Justifications must be accepted by both departments, and by the dean of each school involved.

f. The manner in which courses are used--—e.g. required, prerequisite, option—should be spelled out for each department or program involved.

g. Students required to take courses should have priority in registering over those for whom the courses are an option or an elective; it is important that enrollment caps be managed so that those requiring courses are not penalized because of their cross-listed status.

h. The general education status (i.e., Perspectives on the World, etc.) should be identical for each cross-listed course.

i. Any costs involved should be fairly allocated between schools when more than one school is involved.

3. If proposals are approved by respective school curriculum committees and deans, the dean of the initiating school will send a recommendation to the Provost's Office), along with a copy to Records and Registration.

4. The Provost’s Office will direct appropriate staff members to cross-list courses in The College’s course database, the Undergraduate Bulletin, and the Schedule of Classes. As a result, whenever courses appear under one prefix, they will be followed with a parenthetical "same as" designation giving the other prefix and course name. For the purposes of satisfying any requirement, these courses shall be treated as equivalent (except that departments or programs required by accrediting agencies to offer specifically titled courses may reserve the right to refuse to offer credit to students taking cross-listed courses under the alternative prefix and title). Departments or programs having cross-listed courses shall consult and cooperate on the staffing of those courses.

5. The automatic "same as" tag will stay in effect until Academic Affairs and the Scheduling Office are notified of discontinuance. The Office of Records and Registration must be notified each semester such courses are offered.

Discontinuance Process -- A department or program wishing to discontinue "same as" cross-listing for a course should follow the steps listed below:

1. Departments or programs wishing to discontinue cross-listed courses should first consult with other departments or programs offering the course. Ordinarily the discontinuance policy is unilateral; a course would not remain cross-listed against a department’s or program’s wishes. Students from all programs involved would, however, need to be protected from any possible arbitrary discontinuance of a required course.

2. Departments or programs wishing to discontinue cross-listed courses should make their intentions known in writing to the dean of their school, indicating whether they wish to drop the course altogether, or if they wish to continue listing the course under its own prefix. If the course is required for the major, then the dean needs to be informed as to the nature of alternative requirements made available to students expecting to take the course. A written copy should be sent to deans of other schools affected by the change.

3. The dean may either immediately grant the request (with notification to the school curriculum committee), or submit it to the curriculum committee for its action on changes in major requirements that may result. If the course is cross-listed with another school, the dean will first consult with the dean of that school.

4. When the final decision to discontinue a cross listed course is made, the initiating dean will send a notification of discontinuance to the Provost's Office (with a copy to Records and Registration).
