Welcome to Our New Incoming Students,
and Welcome Back to Our Returning Students!
We hope you have a successful 2008-09 academic year!
Department of Biology
The Department of Biology offers a broad-based biology curriculum, which emphasizes analytical skills, critical thinking, and hands-on practical experience with up-to-date instrumentation. The curriculum provides a foundation with three core courses (genetics, cell biology, and ecology); students may then choose from a broad array of upper division courses to complete their degree. Students who complete the Biology major are well-prepared to continue on to teach or to enter graduate school, professional school in the health sciences, or the workforce. Our graduates find that their applications are highly competitive.

The College is committed in its support of the department’s efforts to develop into a community of teacher-scholars. In August of 2000, we moved into a new 76,000 sq ft building dedicated entirely to Biology, with over $3 million in new scientific equipment and computing and multimedia hardware--all available for shared use by faculty and students.
One of the most significant experiences for many biology majors is their participation in an independent research project or internship with a faculty member in the Biology Department or with research scientists at other institutions. Many students have presented the results of their research at state, regional, and national scientific conferences and each year some students are co-authors on published abstracts or peer-reviewed papers. By the end of their undergraduate experience, many students have become colleagues of the faculty members, illustrating not only the level of work that students are able to achieve, but also illustrating the close relationships that students are able to develop with their faculty mentors.
