Course Overview
The Culture and Society Orientation class is a Pass/Fail 10 week seminar. The course instructor is a faculty member or academic administrator. A peer adviser will be assigned to each section. The peer adviser, an upper level fellow student, provides an additional source of knowledge and the experience of being a student who entered TCNJ as Open Option in Culture and Society and has successfully made the transition to a Culture and Society major or majors. The instructor and peer adviser serve as facilitators, guiding students through the readings, class discussions, group activities, and assignments.

Course objectives
At the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Develop/reinforce academic skills necessary for success in college courses
- Ease transition/adjustment to college
- Increase knowledge of TCNJ's mission, policies, and procedures
- Identify and understand the purposes of the various offices, services, and resources available to support student learning
- Provide information that may aid in career exploration and identifying career opportunities
- Have a better understanding of personal values, skills, and interests
- Develop a plan of action in selecting a major within or outside the School of Culture and Society
Materials Needed For Class
To ensure success in this class, you will be required to have the following:
- 2005-2006 The College of New Jersey Undergraduate Bulletin
- Access to a computer that will allow you to send and receive e-mail and surf the World Wide Web.
Attendance
This course requires students to attend class. The materials covered in this class are essential for attaining student success. Since the class emphasizes individual and group participation, attendance is required. The course is graded on a "Pass/Fail" basis; most of your grade will be based on attendance, although you will be required to do a few outside assignments. Students have FAILED this course for not attending; don't let this happen to you!
Assignments
Assignments will involve the following topics:
- Personal Essay
- Camus Resources: Scavenger Hunt
- Taking a Career Assessment Test (in class)
- Time Management Worksheets
- Complete Multicultural Awareness Quiz
- Prepare interview questions for department chairs
- Creating a Resume and Cover Letter
All homework assignments will be typed unless otherwise specified. All readings and assignments are listed on SOCS under RESOURCES.
