The Department of Special Education, Language & Literacy offers a program that prepares students to be teachers of students with disabilities. This five-year program, featuring a double major with dual certification, culminates in a masters degree in special education and NJ teaching certificates.
The program meets the standards and requirements of:
- National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
- State of New Jersey teacher education
- Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)
At the end of the fourth year, students will earn a bachelor’s degree in their liberal arts major and special education. The course of study continues through the following summer and academic year and culminates with a master’s degree.
Preparation includes theory and practice in teaching students with diverse learning abilities including students with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and severe disabilities. New Jersey certification does not distinguish between these diagnostic labels; the certificate establishes qualification to teach individuals with any one or combination of the above disabling conditions.
Graduates of the program are considered “highly qualified” teachers and therefore meet current requirements for obtaining employment in New Jersey school districts.
