Before Departure
Health
Obtain the necessary health examination and consult with your physician regarding necessary medical preparations if applicable
Students studying abroad will need international health insurance. If the student is going on a program sponsored by ISA or CIEE he or she will pay for insurance as part of their program fee. If the student is going on a TCNJ or NJSCIS program, he or she will get insurance through a group policy with TCNJ. No student should purchase insurance individually.
Documentation and Emergency Preparation
You should already have your passport, if not, apply immediately
Read your acceptance material and determine if you need a visa, if you do apply for it as soon as you have been accepted or as otherwise instructed in your acceptance material.
Understand program policies and what the program includes and does not include
Make financial preparations
Obtain travel documents
Plan how to get in touch while abroad
Plan what to do in case of emergency and read Risk Factors and Strategies to Reduce Risk
Complete a data file (Do you know what is a data file is?)
The student should obtain an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) which also provides discounts abroad (see website for details for the student’s particular country) and a basic level of insurance: ISIC CARD
ISIC cards can be processed while the student waits in Green Hall 111, the student should bring:
- Driver’s license
- Student ID card
- Check for $22 made out to TCNJ
- 1 passport-sized photo
- 1 completed application for an ISIC card (download form now)
