Requirements

 

Application, plus a supplemental documents envelope must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies prior to the deadline in order for an application to be considered complete. Incomplete applications cannot be reviewed. It is the responsibility of the applicant to be sure all required items are sent and received.

Application Deadline

  • The deadline to apply for matriculation into most programs is:

  • April 15th for September (March 1 for Counselor Education**, MAT, and Educational Leadership*-principal licensure)
  • October 15th for January (October 1 for Counselor Education)
  • The deadline for Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Educational Leadership* (principal licensure) programs, and Counselor Education** programs is:

  • March 1st for September
  • (Note: MAT students who apply for the March 1 deadline begin taking classes in the summer.)
  • *The Educational Leadership Immersion program begins in the summer.
  • **The EdS Marriage and Family Program follows the April 15th deadline.
  • The deadlines for Master of Education in Instruction (offered in conjunction with RTC) are:

  • August 1st for September
  • October 15th for January
  • March 1 for summer
  • The deadlines to apply for non-matriculation are:

  • December 1st for spring
    August 1st for fall

Application Form

  • All applications should be submitted online. A computer is available in the office, if internet access is not available. If extenuating circumstances exist, a paper form may be completed.

Application Fee

  • The application fee is currently $70. This fee is waived for students who formerly enrolled at The College.
  • A check or money order payable to The College of New Jersey must be included in the envelope of supplemental documents.
  • Do not send cash.
  • Please print applicant's name on the front of the check or money order.
  • Applications cannot be reviewed without payment of this fee and fees are non-refundable.

Enrollment Deposit

  • Effective January 2008, matriculated students (other than RTCM) will be required to submit a $100.00 enrollment deposit upon acceptance to secure their seat. This enrollment deposit is non-refundable, but will be entered as a credit toward the student's account.
  • Payment should be made online through the URL provided in the acceptance letter. A check or money order payable to The College of New Jersey may be included with the offer acceptance form if you choose not to pay online. ((Please print applicant's name on the front of the check or money order.) Do not send cash.

 

Transcripts

  • An official transcript is required from each college you have attended other than The College of New Jersey.
  • Official transcripts should be requested for The College of New Jersey from each institution you have attended and mailed directly to you.
  • Transcripts are accepted as official when they are received in their original sealed envelope. Transcripts stamped as "Issued to Student" cannot be accepted as official.
  • Submit all official transcripts in their sealed envelope along with all other supplemental documents prior to the established deadline.

International Applicants

  • The College of New Jersey welcomes applications from students outside of the United States. In addition to the items which appear in the Application Checklist, international applicants must have score reports submitted for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if their native language is not English and must complete an Affidavit of Financial Support as well as additional forms which area available at http://www.tcnj.edu/~iss/forms.html.
  • All students who attend a non-U.S. Institution must have all of their educational documents translated into English and evaluated on a course-by-course basis by an accredited agency as to the U.S. equivalency of their course work.
  • An I-20 cannot be issued until after the student is officially admitted to The College. For more information, including required forms, please visit the International Student Services website.
  • The College of New Jersey offers a number of degree and certification programs at overseas/international locations. Students must fulfill the requirements listed below prior to enrolling for course work at any overseas/international site. Please check the appropriate box on Section A of the application indicating your location of study.
  • Students attending overseas/international site do not require an I-20 or an Affidavit of Financial Support.

Recommendations

  • Please provide letter of recommendation forms to two individuals who can evaluate your academic performance, relevant work experience, and/or ability to pursue graduate study. Recommendation letters are not required for non-matriculation applications.
  • Supply one recommendation form and self-addressed envelope to each recommender. Explain to the recommender that the completed recommendation is to be placed in the envelope which is then sealed, signed and returned to you.
  • An indication to the recommender of an expected date of return may encourage promptness on his or her part. The unopened envelope should be submitted in the envelope of supplemental documents.
  • While some programs will allow a letter without the official completed recommendation form, Counselor Education does require its applicants to use the form.

National Standardized Admission Test

  • Candidates for admissions to graduate degree programs and college certificate programs are required to take the appropriate standardized test.
  • Please remember that the test scores are not to be included in the application packet. The candidate should request that a score report be sent to The College of New Jersey (Code #R2519). Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (general test) information may be obtained from ETS at 800/GRE-CALL. Candidates required to take the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) may obtain information from Psychological Corporation at 800/622-3231.
  • The standardized test must be completed by the established application deadline dates. Please take the appropriate exam so that your results are received by the application deadline. Students applying for our overseas sites may take either the GRE(general test) or MAT.
  • The appropriate standardized test is waived if the candidate holds a master's degree or the U.S. equivalent to a master's degree.
  • NOTE: Test scores may not be more than five years old.

Student Essay

  • A student essay is required with all completed applications. The essay may be included with the supplemental documents noted above or may be uploaded through the online application
  • The essay should be a personal statement expressing your professional goals and reasons for wanting to enroll as a graduate student at The College of New Jersey.

Resume / CV

  • Required for: MEd Educational Leadership: Instruction; MA and EDs programs in Counselor Education; can be submitted for other programs
  • Resume/CV may be uploaded through the online application
  • For Counselor Education applicants:  Your resume/CV should be accompanied by a bulleted list of all of your activities in each of the categories below (Please be sure to provide the dates for your participation in each listed activity):    RELATED PRE-PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE, including, but not limited to: Volunteer community service and/or Participation in student organizations; Internships, Work-study and/or Student teaching experiences; or Summer jobs, Relevant part-time employment, and/or work in Residence Life RELATED PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE, including, but are not limited to: teaching, counseling, case management, nursing, social work, clergy, and addiction counseling experiences in a paraprofessional role

Copy of Teacher Certification

  • Required for: MEd Educational Leadership: Instruction; MEd Special Education; MEd Educational Leadership; can be submitted for other programs
