GREEK LIFE AT TCNJ CURRENT BACKGROUND INFORMATION The College of New Jersey recognizes 27 organizations; 15 sororities, 11 fraternities, and 1 co-ed organization. Each organization is founded on high ideals and contributes to a positive campus life experience. The Greek organizations at TCNJ consist of local, professional and national organizations. Theta Nu Xi (QNX) A local organization is one that has 1 to 2 chapters only. The local chapters at TCNJ vary from profession specific to social organizations and they accept members from all majors. A national group has chapters at other campuses and has a national governing body and headquarters. Finally, a professional groups consists of members within the same academic major. The Greek organizations at TCNJ are governed by the Inter-Greek Council. Its purpose is to unite the members of the Greek community in spirit of mutual interest. It organizes and governs activities, highlights goals and opens lines of communication between the members of the organizations and the rest of the campus community. LEADERSHIP The Greek system develops and enhances the leadership abilities of its members. Holding executive offices, becoming a committee chair within an organization or within the Inter-Greek Council can offer the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills. ACADEMICS A 2.2 cumulative GPA is a required to become and remain an active members of a Greek letter organization. First year students must have acquired at least 12 credits towards graduation. Many Greek Letter organizations promote scholarship as part of their Brotherhood/Sisterhood. Individual organizations help their members in this area by offering time management and study skills, as well as scheduling new member study hours. BROTHERHOOD/SISTERHOOD Becoming a member of a Greek Letter organization means more that wearing Greek letters. It means becoming a member of a family away from home. It also means some responsibilities that go beyond attending meetings. Such responsibilities are: friendship, trust, respect and honesty. Becoming a member of the Greek Community will offer the opportunity to make friendships and establish bonds that will last a lifetime. PHILANTHROPY At The College of New Jersey, community service is an important part of Greek Life. Besides allowing time for academics, leadership positions and chapter activities, Greeks find time to participate in service and philanthropic projects. Some of those include: Blood Drives, fund-raisers for Multiple Sclerosis, Juvenile Diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis and the National Kidney Foundation just to name a few. RECRUITMENT This can be best defined as an introduction to Greek Organizations. Each organization sponsors formal and informal events where they share some brief information about their organization. By going to a variety of Rushes, students develop a better understanding about what Greek Life has to offer here at TCNJ. Rushing also helps you find the organization that is right for you. Dates for rush are determined by the Vice President for Rush and Membership Development and shall be approved by the IGC Council Advisor. All organizations are responsible for sending a representative to the Rush lottery each semester to schedule their rush dates. No two same sex Greek organizations shall conduct a rush event at the same time. Interest sessions may be scheduled by a Greek organization any time during the academic year. This is an informal gathering, on-campus, open to all students, faculty, staff, and administrators at TCNJ. The Office of Campus Life strictly prohibits hazing of any kind in any student organization at The College of New Jersey. NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION This is a time period of about six weeks that each organization uses to teach the history, foundation, goals and rituals of their organization to their new members. The College of New Jersey requires that each Greek Organization follow strict guidelines when developing their programs. |
