Software Installation

Last Revised: 11/19/04

The purpose of these guidelines and procedures is to document how User Support Services is structured for installing requested software for campus users.

Requirements for software installation in Academic Labs
User Support Services recommends that each request for software installation and upgrades be submitted as early as possible, and at least 1 month in advance of its required completion date. This advance notice helps to ensure timely and reliable operation of the product. New software installations can not occur once a semester has started. This is intended to minimize the possibility of unfamiliar software causing conflicts with other applications. Other requirements include:

  • Approval and purchase of the product through Information Technology - unless through special arrangements.
  • Adherence to Copyright laws (Licensure).  For example, the number of software copies installed   will not exceed the number purchased.
  • Compatibility with TCNJ’s computing environment.
  • Appropriateness of use.

Standard Products

User Support Services will ensure full integration and functionality of all standard software applications such as Microsoft Office (except Outlook).

See Guidelines and Procedures for Standard Microcomputer Products for list of standard products.

Specialized Software (Limited Support)
User Support Services will install the requested software, configure it for the network, and test it to assure that it executes, prints, and terminates without error. The faculty member is then notified so that he/she can more properly test the application as it will be used for class. It is recommended that test scenarios include material from the intended instruction.
