Harlem Renaissance: Black Paris

Course Description

This course explores Black Consciousness through Harlem Renaissance and the Negritude movement in the 1920’s and the 1930’s in America, as well as in Paris. We critically analyze the poetic, political and cultural relationships between the “New Negro” intellectuals and their Francophone African counterparts. We also offer an in-depth look at Paris and why the French capital becomes the stage for these interactions, which informs the Civil Rights and African independence movements.
