The Bone Marrow Drive was held on March
27, 1997, in an effort to get as many people registered with the HML,
especially minorities. Many
patients with incurable diseases that have had the marrow transplant,
have stood a better chance for a longer life. As a philanthropic
event for the CNHL, the Sisters and the Brothers of Lambda Theta Phi,
Gamma
Chapters, made it a joint effort to get members of the campus community
into the HML registry. Those that registered included our own sisters
and brothers, orientees, students, and some faculty and staff. Our
alumnus, Milena Calixto, attended to support the event.
The AIDS Walk in NY is an annual event that the National Board encourages
for all chapters to participate in. On May 20,2001 we made sure that we
were present at an event that raises money towards AIDS research and for
the GMHC. It was a way to get togerther with sisters from other chapters
for some fresh air and exercise, and most importantly, a chance to walk
together
for a good cause.
Annual NY Puerto Rican Parade
The Sisters at Gamma finished the chapter summer retreat with the Annual
NY Puerto Rican Parade. We march with pride with our sisters from all chapters
accross the nation to represent Lambda Theta Alpha to the fullest. It is
always such a wonderful opportunity for the sisters to come together to
support and acknowledge a culture that is prominent in our organization.
In an effort to increase the number of college students who are registered
to vote, the sisters of Gamma Chapter in conjunction with the brothers
of Lambda Theta Phi, Gamma Chapter, held a Voter's Registration on October
2, 1997. As this was an important election year for New Jersey residents,
every effort was made to register as many eligible students as possible.
A marathon held every year to raise funds and honor those who have lived
and died with Breast Cancer, was held on October 5, 1997. Gamma Chapter
participated along with sisters from various other chapters to make this
a National Board event. The sisters all worked to help register the runners
and walkers, handing out numbers to walkers and directing participants
to their appropriate tents.
Martin House is an organization that works with underpriveledged children.
Through involvement with various organizations, the children are exposed
to caring individuals who want only their happiness. October's program
was to paint pumpkins with the children for Halloween. Several sisters
of Lambda Theta Alpha helped to not only paint with the children, but also
set up, decorate, and clean up the area that was used to the event.
Christmas Gifts For Children With AIDS
Christmas is the season of giving. It is the time
when families come together to share the joy of giving. However, not everyone
is so fortunate to
discover presents under the tree. Imagine being a 14 year old mother with
AIDS and
having to witness your new born child also experience this deadly disease.
The Christmas holiday does not seem so "merry" afterall. This family
who resides in Trenton consists of 14 and 17 year old mothers, babies
ranging
from a new born to 2 years of age. Gamma Chapter sponsores a child
annually and donates a gift so that he or she may be able to enjoy
Christmas a
little bit more.
Clothing and Food Drives
Gamma Chapter has done endless amounts of clothing and canned
food drives to serve the Trenton community. In November of 2000, Gamma Chapter
collected many articles of clothing and sponsored them to the Ewing Concerned
Citizens. In that same month, Gamma Chapter also collected many cans of non-perishable
foods and donated them to the Trenton area. These donations helped out their
receivers greatly.
Lions International
On Saturday, March 6, 1999, Gamma Chapter, Pi Chapter (West
Chester Univ.), Iota Chapters of LTA and LTPhi (Rider Univ.), and Lambda
Theta Phi, Gamma (The College
of NJ), donated
a day of their time for a good cause. The Community Service was held at
Lions International in Trenton, NJ. The brothers, sisters, and interests
worked with used eyeglasses and sorted, cleaned, measured for prescription,
and sent to various countries in South America for individuals
in need. While participating in this community service, everyone involved
had the oportunity to give back and have a good time as well.

Educational Workshops
Gamma Chapters is known to exceed
their goals of educational workshops and community services. The Sisters
of Gamma Chapter are very creative when thinking of ideas for workshop
ideas, implement the ideas well, and usually have a great turnout. Some
workshop topics include: Time Management Workshop, The Latina's Role in
Latin America, Planning Your Financial Future, The History of Greek Life,
How to Get Straight A's, Safe Sex Workshop, and Inter-racial Relationship
Workshop, among many others.
