Academic Programs

For a Full List of Academic Programs and Courses, Please View the Mathematics & Statistics Undergraduate Bulletin pdf

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics offers programs in three areas: statistics, mathematics, and mathematics teaching. In each of these programs students are provided with a basic mathematical background which will be utilized in advanced study in one of these areas:

Majors

Minors

Other Mathematics & Statistics Options

For students with major codes MATA, MATC, MATT, or MATE

In courses offered by the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics and Computer Science a grade of C- or better must be earned for the course to satisfy a graduation requirement of the major.

For 300 or 400 level courses, at most two grades of D or D+ may be counted. Only one of these grades can be earned in required courses. But, a grade of at least C- must be earned in any required course that is a prerequisite for another course which is subsequently taken.

MATA, MATT,or MATE majors must earn a grade of:

  • B- or better in MAT127 or MAT128, and
  • C or better in MAT200 or MAT205.

MATC majors must earn a grade of:

  • C or better in STA116 or STA215, and
  • C or better in MAT316.

In order to transer into the MATA, MATT, or MATE major a student must have earned a grade of:

  • B- or better in at least one of MAT125, MAT127, and MAT128 and
  • C or better in MAT200 or MAT205.

In order to transfer into the MATC major a student must have earned a grade of:

  • B- or better in at least one of MAT125, MAT127, and MAT128, and
  • C or better in STA116 or STA215.

Students with major code MATT, or MATE must meet the following overall GPA requirements as prerequisites to the field placements:

  • 2.5 for JPE (Junior Professional Experience)
  • 2.75 for student teaching and graduation.

Graduation Requirements

All majors must achieve a cumulative average in their major of at least 2.25 in order to receive a degree in the department. A minimum of twenty-one credits in the major must be earned in the department. A minimum of fifteen of the final twenty-one credits must be earned in the department. Additionally, MATT and MATE majors must achieve an overall 2.50 grade point average to meet the state certification requirements.

Retention Appeals Procedure

Before a student can be dismissed from a mathematics major program, the department will issue at least one warning to the student, with an opportunity for discussion and assistance. Dismissal notices will be issued by the department each semester. The student may appeal to the department and thereafter to the dean of arts and sciences. The entire process should be completed in time to provide the student an opportunity to find another major before the start of the next semester.

Prerequisites

If a student has not met the exact prerequisites of a course as stated in this bulletin, but believes that the requirements have been satisfied through equivalent experiences, the student may gain admission to the course with the approval of the department chair.

Advanced Placement

If a student has a strong background in a particular mathematics course, then he/she may achieve advanced placement in one of two ways: (1) credit by examination; or (2) waiver of the course. Students given permission to waive course are required to replace it with an upper-level (300 or 400) mathematics course
