Area Coordinator of Woodwind Studies, Roger McKinney, has been an esteemed member of the TCNJ Music Department faculty since 1957 where he teaches:

 

 

Mr. McKinney is the Director of the Woodwind Chamber Ensemble, “The Chamber Winds” and the Founder and Director of the Clarinet Choir.  He was awarded a Fulbright grant as an exchange professor to Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität, Frankfurt am Main, Germany in 1995—1996.

As a professional performer, Mr. McKinney has been Principal Clarinet with the Trenton Civic Opera, Mercer County Symphonic Band, Pro Musica of New Hope, PA, the Princeton Symphony, the Princeton Chamber Orchestra, and the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra.  In addition, Mr. McKinney has numerous solo clarinet performances to his credit, including performances with the Amado String Quartet, the Trenton Symphony Orchestra, the TCNJ Percussion Ensemble and Wind Ensemble, and the Princeton Chamber Orchestra.

Mr. McKinney has produced several complete arrangements for clarinet choir and some featuring the clarinet as solo, including Bach’s Choral (Kummt Her Zumir, Spricht Gottessohn), Fugue in g minor (little), Bassi’s Concert Fantasia (for solo clarinet and clarinet choir on themes from Rigoletto), and Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Flight of the Bumble Bee.  He has also compiled an exhaustive Compendium on Clarinet Playing, which can be found on his website, www.tcnj.edu/~mckinney, and includes links to such topics as Reed Fixing, Mouthpieces, Breathing, Style, and Intonation.  Mr. McKinney’s research also includes a chronology of Mozart’s Travels, which is extensively detailed on the website.
