David Szepessy is an Adjunct Instructor of Music at The College of New Jersey where he teaches:
- MUS 219: Intermediate Private Cello Lessons
- MUS 319: Advanced Private Cello Lessons
- MUS 419: Advanced Private Cello Lessons
Prior to his appointment at TCNJ, Mr. Szepessy taught cello and chamber music at Northeast Missouri State University, Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, University of West Virginia, Wheaton College, Swarthmore College, and The Peabody Conservatory of John’s Hopkins University.
Born into a family of professional musicians, Mr. Szepessy received early lessons from his father. His most important cello studies were with Janos Starker, Pablo Casals, and Fritz Magg. He also studied chamber music with Menahem Pressler and William Primrose. In addition to his completed degrees, Mr. Szepessy has fulfilled all the course work and recitals for the D.M. in Cello Performance at Indiana University.
As a performer, Mr. Szepessy played with the Pittsburgh Symphony and later became the Solo Cellist of the Columbia Artists Chamber Orchestra. He was a founding member of the Trio del Arte with whom he performed for ten years. Mr. Szepessy has performed extensively throughout the United States and in all of the countries of western and central Europe as well as the Middle East, Puerto Rico, and Canada. The New York Times has called his playing “…a model of sensitivity,” and the Washington Post describes it as “…Exuberant, colorful and robust.” The cellist Janos Starker has described Mr. Szepessy as “…an exceptionally gifted instrumentalist and musician.”
In 2005, Mr. Szepessy recorded Seven Deadly Sins for unaccompanied cello and Nine Women Dancers by Thomas Whitman, under the complete title, Strings Attached, on North/South Records, a commercial recording company that specializes in new music by American composers. He has also recently recorded the complete Solo Cello Suites of Bach and is in the process of editing them.
