First Year Experience

Mission Statement:

As educators, guided by The College of New Jersey’s mission, we will lead and support efforts to create a safe and healthy living learning residential community that promotes the academic success and personal development of all students.  We will work purposefully to help first year students with the transition from high school to TCNJ and the greater community. Our aspiration is to develop students who are thoroughly prepared for their Sophomore Year Experience and beyond.

Welcome to the First Year Experience!

A successful first year student is one that learns to connect with both the academic and co-curricular/social aspects of a college environment.

The College's commitment to this goal has led to a nationally recognized First Year Experience program and a first year retention rate of 95% since its inception.

Move In Information

To access your housing assignment and roommate information log onto TESS using your Student ID and password.  Click on "Room Info" under the section titled Personal Info.  There you will find your housing assignment and roommate information, if applicable.  If you have a roommate we recommend contacting him or her prior to your arrival on campus.  Please reference the "Suggestions on what to bring to campus" link below for assistance on what to bring on move-in day.  The specific time for move-in is determined by the floor you are living on.  Please make note of your specific time using the "Hall Opening and Closings" link below.

Building Strong Communities

This goal is accomplished through the integration of academic work, opportunities for civic engagement and service learning, and the transitional programming aimed at our first year students living in residence. The Department of Residential Education focuses its efforts on teaching our incoming first year students the basic life skills needed to cope with the transition to a higher education environment and build strong communities within our residence halls. Encouraging Academic Development

In the fall of 2004, our first year residents began participating in an exciting residential community design that integrates academics as well as residential based programming. All of the first year students are registered to participate in the First Seminar Program (FSP) during the fall of their freshman year. More »
