Course Syllabi and Course Outlines

A course document should be distributed in every course during the first week of the course. There is no set format, but the course document should include at a minimum:

  1. Course title, course number, number of credits, and prerequisites.
  2. Instructor's name, office address, office hours. (Office hours can be specified by time or by appointment.)
  3. Required materials such as textbook(s), lab manual, study guide, supplies.
  4. Course topics.
  5. Course requirements such as exams, projects, assignments, term papers, field trips, laboratory experiences.
  6. Criteria for determining final grade.
  7. Specific attendance policy.

(approved through governance 1985-86)

Normally syllabi or course documents are on file with the academic department. In some instances, syllabi may be found on the webpages of an academic department or of an individual faculty member. It is expected that syllabi will be reviewed on a regular basis by the dean to determine that they are consistent with college policies and, where applicable, with accreditation standards.
