Finding a MAC Address

 

The MAC address of a computer is the machine's physical address on the network.

 

To find the MAC address of a PC with Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Windows Button.
  2. Type in cmd in the Start Search dialogue box immediately above the Windows Button and press enter.
  3. At the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.
  4. You want to locate the 12 character long physical address of the computer. This will be in six groups of two, separated by hyphens
  5. Note, this may be the second group of characters presented (you do not want the wireless address).

 

To find the MAC address of a PC with Windows 2000 or XP, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button and select run
  2. Type cmd and press enter
  3. At the prompt type ipconfig /all and press enter
  4. You want to locate the 12 character long physical address of the computer. This will be in six groups of two, separated by hyphens, beginning with 00
  5. Note, this may be the second group of characters presented (you do not want the wireless address).

 

To find the MAC address of a PC with Windows 98 or ME, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button and select run
  2. Type winipcfg and press enter
  3. Select your network adapter from the drop down menu
  4. You want to locate the 12 character long physical address of the computer. This will be in six groups of two, separated by hyphens
  5. Note, this may be the second group of characters presented (you do not want the wireless address).

 

To find the MAC address of a Mac, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left of the screen
  2. Select "About this Mac"
  3. Click the "More Information" button
  4. Scroll down on the left to "Network" and select "Location" under this by clicking once
  5. On the right, scroll down to "Built-in Internet". Below this, look for "Hardware (MAC) Address"
  6. You want to locate the 12 character long physical address of the computer. This will be in six groups of two, separated by hyphens
