New Jersey Paid Family Medical Leave Law
Governor Corzine signed the New Jersey Paid Family Medical Leave Law on May 2, 2008. This law will provide employees with 6 weeks of paid family leave at two-thirds of their weekly salaries up to a maximum of $524.00 per week. Paid leave will be for employees who are needed at home in order to care for a newborn or adopted child or to care for a sick family member.
The program will be funded through payroll deductions that will start January 1, 2009. The family leave tax deduction will be .09% of eligible wages up to $28,900. As a result, the maximum amount each employee will pay is $26.01. The tax will appear on the employee's pay stub and YESS as NJ FLI/EE.
Eligible employees can begin to take paid family leave on July 1, 2009. Paid family leave will run concurrently with all other family leave programs.
