AFA-283: Digital Photography

May 29 - June 28, 2009

First Interest Session:

Monday, November 24, 2008

12:00pm (Noon)

Holman Hall 315

This four-week intensive program will focus on Digital Photography and, in addition to rigorous academic coursework, the students will experience many of the cultural wonders of Buenos Aires, including libraries, museums and art galleries.

Excursions to El Tigre and Escobar will provide students with a glimpse of life on the river and the traditional Argentine gaucho (cowboy) respectively. Students will live in conveniently located residencias similar to boarding houses/dorms, located within 10 minutes of the University.

City of Buenos Aires, Argentina:

This cosmopolitan city of 13 million is well-known for its cultural diversity and dynamic atmosphere, making it one of South America's most elegant and vibrant cities. The unique history of Buenos Aires revolves around the Western European immigrants who descendents have preserved their influences since the 19th Century by way or architecture, art and style. However, this capital city of Argentina has also adopted some more modern architectural styles, which provide a notable contrast to the city's deep-rooted traditions and history.

El Tigre:

(Excursion) This riverside town of 290,000 people is a popular weekend retreat and most famous for the attraction known as Puerto de las Frutas. In the past, fruits picked on the islands were traded, but now you can buy wicker articles, carpets, furniture, adornments, and native handicrafts. Also in this delta region is the house, and now museum, of the national hero from the province of San Juan, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento.

Escobar ( Dia del Campo):

(Excursion) The Argentine gaucho is a prominent figure in the history and culture of Argentina. During this excursion, students have the unique opportunity to visit a farm near Buenos Aires, learn about the life of an Argentine gaucho and his farming traditions, and taste traditional country cuisine. Students learn about agibusiness in Argentina and experience traditional guacho music and dances. The day is made complete with insight into the history and preparation of "mate", a traditional tea, and "asado", Argentine-style barbeque. Students will stay overnight at an estancia.

This program in Buenos Aires is designed for students of all majors regardless of their language level. In order to assist in their transition to Buenos Aires, students will also complete a survival Spanish course organized through the trip's sponsoring program. The survival Spanish class is designed to enable students to feel more comfortable in their surroundings and will increase their understanding of Argentine culture.(Students will not recieve academic credit for this language class.)

ADA: 28310 - Digital Photography

(4 credit course)

This course is inspired by the culture of Buenos Aires and the writing of the prominent author Jorge Luis Borges, and thus will benefit greatly from the program's location in Argentina. The class will focus on how digital photography can be used as immediate response to place and a new culture. The program will culminate in a student exhibition.
