AGD-365: Book Arts
July 17 - August 8, 2009
Interest Session:
December 4 , 2008
1:00pm - 2:00pm
Art Department Conference Room, 3rd Floor, Holman Hall
This 3-week program is designed to develop students' individual skills and interests in the field of Artists Books. Includes an investigation of traditional and modern bookbinding in the Czech Republic and Europe and hands on book design and production. The city's parks and public spaces will provide opportunities for creative writing, drawing, painting, photography and hoistorical and cultural investigations.
Founded in the mid 14th Century, Charles University is one of the oldest universities in the world and holds the prestigious title of leading university in all Eastern Europe. The university is centrally located near downtown and merely a four minute walk to Vysherad castle, a great place for an afternoon picnic in manicured gardens or to view the setting sun over a bustling city.
City of Prague, Czech Republic:
Prague is cropped out from the banks of the Vltava River, and has been the political, cultural, and economic hotbed of Eastern Europe for over 1000 years. With over 1.2 million local inhabitants residing in the city proper, and many international travelers crossing streets during busy summer travel, Prague is a bustling capital of global importance. Since 1992, Prague has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason: The city is an unaltered, hands-on museum full of famous theatres and opera houses performing Mozart's Don Giovanni, open parks with political protest history, and centuries-old buildings converted into late-night discothèques. The galling years of communist rule linger in the minds of Czechs, and striking conversation on the subject brings out a history and culture lesson that could only be learned from the source itself.
Activities in Prague include a performance at the National Theater, visits to a local medieval cathedral and castle, and tours of numerous art galleries.
Ceske Svycarsko (Czech Switzerland) National Park:
(Excursion) Never overlook the natural beautoutside of the city. This northern Bohemian national park boasts beautiful scenery fohiking and seeing snow-capped mountains. It is famous for sandstone cliffs, pillars anland bridges. It houses the largest sandstone canyon in Europe and because of this, a largbody of water once rested there, leaving fossils of sea animals seen in the cliff walls. The lynx, eagle owl, and peregrine falcon are often seen here. Czech Switzerland is a 2.5 hour train ride through the Czech landscape from Prague.
Terezin:
(Excursion) A former fortress and garrison town in northeast Czech Republic, Terezin was used as a concentration camp for Jews, scholars, and children. To make the death camp “acceptable” among the locals in Terezin, the camp was made to look normal and integrated into the city. Grassy parks and flowerbeds were built, and music concerts were had to deceive International Red Cross inspectors. At War’s end it reversed roles and interned Nazi commanders. This sober and shocking excursion takes students down the same path that led more than 33,000 to their death during World War II.
Vienna, Austria:
(2-Night Excursion) Watch the mist glistening off the Danube River while sitting in a Viennese café enjoying wiener schnitzel, sipping espresso, and chatting with locals. Discover forgotten side streets and find yourself in Hotel Sacher, Europe’s famed watering hole where aristocrats and diplomats met to discuss politics and eat the hotel’s sachertorte - a dry chocolate cake with apricot jam. Tour Schonbrunn Palace and embrace the striking architectural beauty by learning how the structure of the buildings reflect the city’s history. Tour the world famous Opera and watch a performance at a Viennese theater.
