Summer Study in "The Castle" England

LIT-370: Special Topics "Literary Landscapes in British Literature "

July 10, 2009 - August 7, 2009

First Interest Session: October 23, 2008 - 4:00pm - Social Sciences 103

This was one of the best experiences of my life. I never thought I could learn so much about myself and make such amazing friends in such a short amount of time…Standing on the cliffs of Whitby, listening to Dr. Tarter read and seeing what Stoker saw as he wrote Dracula, is one of the coolest things I have ever done. (and that's coming from a science major!)

… What was it like to live in a castle? Everything I thought it would be and more! You feel like you're living in that dream you had as a little kid.

                                                                   --Amber Gietter (sophomore, Chemistry major)

LIT 370:  Special Topics: “Literary Landscapes in British Literature ”

4 credit hours (1 academic unit) - Liberal Learning elective

Open to ALL MAJORS

Would you like to study abroad in England during the summer, live in a castle, and join us as we bring literature to life?

This is an opportunity for students of all majors to live in England and study some of the country's most fascinating literature. This year it is being held at the beautiful Harlaxton "Castle" in the Midlands, where courses have been held for the past 5 years .

We will be reading four literary texts and bringing this literature to life as we visit many literary landscapes, including:

  • Mystical Stonehenge
  • the Tor and Abbey of Glastonbury
  • the medieval cities of Canterbury and Winchester
  • the dramatic Cornish coast
  • Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon
  • and the magical Sherwood Forest

Three days in the magnificent Lake District include trips to Wordsworth's house, his little country school of Hawkeshead, and walks along the lakes. Four days in Cornwall include trips to Merlin's Cave, King Arthur's Castle ruins in Tintagel, St. Nectan's Glen, the Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle, and the magical Minster Wood.

Weekends are free for your own travel plans in England and/or Europe.
