What can I recycle at TCNJ?

Commingles: (Bottles and Cans)

Glass

  • Bottles
  • Jars
  • Food and beverage containers

Plastic Bottles

  • PETE #1
  • PETE #2

Metal Cans

  • Tin
  • Steel
  • Bi-metal
  • Aluminum

Commingles can be mixed together in one container using a clear trash bag only.
Commingles are NOT required to be cleaned but must they must be emptied.

Paper

Corrugated cardboard (“wavy” interior is acceptable)

  • Must be broken down or folded
  • Must keep clean and dry

Newspaper

  • Must keep clean and dry

Mixed paper

  • Magazines
  • Standard and Junk Mail
  • Office and copy paper
  • Phone books
  • Paper file folders
  • Paper envelopes
  • Colored paper
  • Food menus

Newspaper and mixed paper items can be combined loosely in the same clear bag.

Please note that this list of items is subject to change with new disposal contracts. 


What can I NOT recycle at TCNJ?

When recycling materials have been mixed with bulk trash, such as food waste, they are now considered contaminated and must be removed as bulk trash.

Common Contaminated Items that TCNJ can NOT Accept

  • Anything that is contaminated by food
  • Paper coffee cups
  • Pizza boxes
  • Food paper plates
  • Text Books
  • Paper towels (these are mistaken for the paper recycling containers in the bathrooms)
  • Pyrex glass

How can I avoid contaminating recyclables?

  • Empty liquids out of bottles and cans prior to recycling (soda cans, water bottles, sports drinks, etc.)
  • Don't place garbage (paper towels, gum wrappers, etc.) inside recycling containers or bottles and cans that are being recycled
  • Ask questions regarding TCNJ Recycling Guidelines when in doubt if something can be recycled

BATTERY DROP OFF LOCATIONS ON CAMPUS:

  • Brower Student Center – entrance facing Green Hall
  • Biology Building – Second Floor

Cell phones and their accessories

(Can NOT be thrown into the trash, most products come with this sticker)

  • Bring cell phones and their accessories to the Office of Telecommunications located in Green Hall basement, Room 20.
    Drop off hours: 8:30 am-4:00 pm Monday-Friday.
  • Contact Amanda Radosti at radosti@tcnj.edu to request a display box for your area
  • Check with your cell phone provider to see if they accept old cell phones

Inkjet Cartridges

  • Bring inkjet catridges to User Support Services, located in Green Hall basement, Suite 1. Drop off hours 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.
  • ink jet displays located at the Brower Student Center Main Information Desk
  • Contact Amanda Radosti at radosti@tcnj.edu to request a display for your area
  • Check with your cell phone provider to see if they accept old cell phones

Copier/Printer Toner  (including Canon toner cartridges)

  • Return to OfficeMax
