Neos vs Temenos: One question I'd like to address right off is why I'm using neov instead of temenov. Both Temenov and Neov are words used in classical Greek for temple, or sacred place. However temenov, in its modern usage, is the Greek word for mosque. That just didn't feel right to me. So neov is what I'm going with. (A note on the title of this page, listed above: Neoj literally means "temple". New (pronounced neh-oh) means "temple of".) Who am I: My name is Dan. That's the easy answer. If you're simply curious as to who I am, and what my life is about, click here. If you're wondering why I've built this site, that's a longer story. Sort of. I started reading the "Greek Myths" as a small child. I never really stopped. My spiritual journey led me from Agnosticism, through Catholicism, and now to Hellenism. I find myself very drawn to Apollon, and see him as my patron deity. I am a founding member of Dadoukhi, as well as holding membership in Neokoroi, and Hellenion, organizations dedicated to the worship and study of the deities of Ancient Greece. If you've specific questions, feel free to contact me. A note on terminology: Followers of the ancient faiths (not just Hellenism) are called many things: Pagans, Wiccans, Neo-Pagans, and so forth. I am (or I call myself) a Hellenic Reconstructionist. Mostly because, between those two words, what I am (and what I do) is summed up nicely). "Pagan" literally refers to anyone who is not a member of one of the three main monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, or Islam). "Wiccan", while an ancient faith which (for some Wiccan groups) traces its ancestry to the ancient Greek beliefs, is a religion unto itself, of which I am not a member. The "neo" in "Neo-Pagan" smacks of "new-age", which is another label I have a problem with (the worship of the Ancient Gods is hardly new after all!). "Hellenic" means that I'm following a tradition native to Greece (Hellas, in Greek). "Reconstructionist" is the methodology we use, and it means that, as a group, we are working to recreate the ancient forms of worship as closely as we can, while acknowledging that there are things that have been lost, and not everything can or should be done exactly as it was over two millennia ago. |
