The Role of the Student
Good advising is based on a collaborative relationship between the advisor and the advisee. Both share the responsibilities for making the relationship a productive one.
The advisee should:
- Provide the advisor with information about his/her interests, goals, educational and career plans.
- Read and know the information in the College Bulletin. Be knowledgeable about policies, procedures, requirements, and deadlines.
- Alert the advisor immediately if difficulty in any classes or changes in personal life demands that adjustments be made in her/her educational plan.
- Keep a record of program requirements and course work completed. Remember, the advisee is ultimately responsible for fulfilling the requirements necessary for graduation. Faculty, advisors, and support services are available to assist the student in obtaining this goal, but the student needs to seek them out.
- Schedule an advising appointment to discuss mid-term grades, next term course selection, and other concerns or questions.
- Keep all scheduled appointments.
- Assume responsibility for obtaining signatures for various forms necessary to withdraw from courses or change programs, and delivering the forms to the proper offices.
- Be an active participant in advisement sessions.
