Advising Session Preparation

Before you meet with your advisor:

  • Identify the Liberal Learning and graduation requirements you need to complete.
  • If you have a declared major, identify major and/or minor courses you need to complete.
  • If you are an open-option student, identify majors of interest and consider selecting introductory courses.
  • Check TESS for the course schedule and map out a tentative schedule with desired courses. Be sure to identify second choice courses.
  • Write down all the questions you have relating the possible majors, minors, careers, academic policies, and your degree audit results (you will receive a degree audit with 75-89.5 earned credits toward your declared major).
  • Schedule a meeting with your advisor.

During the meeting with your advisor:

  • Discuss your current academic performance.
  • If you are an open-option student, discuss career exploration and possible majors.
  • If you have a declared major, discuss the relevancy and availability of internships, part-time and summer employment related to your major.
  • Finalize desired course schedule for the next semester. If applicable be sure your advisor has removed your hold.
  • Be sure you have your copies of your records with you so that you can compare them to what your advisor has.
  • Be candid, tell your advisor what may be affecting your ability to do your best coursework.

After the meeting with your advisor:

  • Register for courses on the date designated for you.
Inform your advisor of any changes that were made after your meeting.
  • Be sure to maintain a record of your academic progress (courses taken, grades received, remaining requirements).
