Advising Session Preparation
Before you meet with your advisor:
- Identify the Liberal Learning and graduation requirements you need to complete.
- If you have a declared major, identify major and/or minor courses you need to complete.
- If you are an open-option student, identify majors of interest and consider selecting introductory courses.
- Check TESS for the course schedule and map out a tentative schedule with desired courses. Be sure to identify second choice courses.
- Write down all the questions you have relating the possible majors, minors, careers, academic policies, and your degree audit results (you will receive a degree audit with 75-89.5 earned credits toward your declared major).
- Schedule a meeting with your advisor.
During the meeting with your advisor:
- Discuss your current academic performance.
- If you are an open-option student, discuss career exploration and possible majors.
- If you have a declared major, discuss the relevancy and availability of internships, part-time and summer employment related to your major.
- Finalize desired course schedule for the next semester. If applicable be sure your advisor has removed your hold.
- Be sure you have your copies of your records with you so that you can compare them to what your advisor has.
- Be candid, tell your advisor what may be affecting your ability to do your best coursework.
After the meeting with your advisor:
- Register for courses on the
date designated for you.
Inform your advisor of any changes that were made after your meeting. - Be sure to maintain a record of your academic progress (courses taken, grades received, remaining requirements).
