Hausdoerffer Gift Provides Scholarships for the Future, Lifetime Income for Donors
"In recent years, it has been one of my ambitions to establish a scholarship for a student majoring in Mathematics at TCNJ."
Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Bill Hausdoerffer '36 has always been good with numbers. Rosemary Canning Hausdoerffer '52 was widely recognized for her creativity as an exemplary school teacher and a role model for other teachers.
By creating a Charitable Gift Annuity to fund this scholarship, Bill and Rosemary will receive increased income for life at a rate greater than 10% per year for life, as well as a substantial tax deduction.
The couple had considered providing for this scholarship as part of their estate. But after talking with development officers at the college, they learned they could fund the scholarship with a charitable gift annuity. And their gift would increase their personal income, with much of their annuity tax free.
Bill: The motivation is my very vivid recollection of all the help I received as an undergraduate at Trenton State Teachers College and as a graduate student at Columbia, financed by the Stout Scholarship of almost $500 cash, awarded by Trenton State Teachers College.
Small as that sum may seem by today's standards, it paid for my Master's Degree in 1939. The next summer that President Roscoe West called me and offered a teaching post, ...thus started a very happy career at our college from about 1940 to 1979.
Rates for charitable gift annuities vary depending on the donor's age. Because much of their income is tax free, they provide a substantially higher rate of return than most other fixed income instruments.
For those with charitable intent and a desire for increased income for life, the charitable gift annuity is an attractive mechanism for helping TCNJ now, and helping yourself at the same time.
For several years there has been an award in the School of Education bearing Rosemary's name, given annually to an outstanding student; now, there will also be two additional prizes thanks to there generosity and appreciation for the support they each received long ago.
