A cluster analysis of relationship development themes was conducted to discern different types of relationship development theories among participants. Using Ward’s Squared Euclidean Distance Method, a three-cluster solution best described most of the sample (n=126). The cluster analysis agglomeration schedule illustrated that the three-cluster solution maximized distances between clusters and minimized distances within clusters.
To determine each cluster’s unique features, cluster-by-complement comparisons (using the chi square statistic) were conducted by comparing the presence/absence of themes for each cluster with its complement (for example, cluster 1 was compared with its complement, clusters 2 and 3 combined).
