Retention Criteria for the PERSIST Scholars Program

1.  The student must maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 for each semester and must earn at least a C- in all science and math courses (or must pass all math and science courses that do not bear a letter grade).

2. The student must remain enrolled full-time (registered for and completing at least 12 semester hours/3 course units of credit) during each semester. The student must remain enrolled in and actively progressing in the Biology or Chemistry major.  To be considered as actively progressing in the major, the student must enroll in and pass (with a grade no lower than C-) at least one math or science course (equivalent to 4 semester hours of credit) each semester and three such courses each academic year.  The following are not included in this total:  courses with course numbers below 100, courses not bearing academic credit, courses taken during the summer, transfer credits, or AP credits.  However, the student also must pass the orientation course in the major (BIO 099 or CHE 099) and either MAT 095 or MAT 096 (if the student is enrolled in them at the start of the semester).

3.  The student must demonstrate continued financial need. The Office of Student Financial Services must have received all necessary documentation and forms required for disbursement of federal and state funds.

4. The student must not have been found in violation of the TCNJ Academic Integrity Policy as outlined in the TCNJ Student Handbook.

5.  The student must meet regularly with both the faculty mentor and the peer mentor during the entire semester and with the tutor during the first six weeks of the semester. The student must attend all seminars, workshops, and other events announced as required for PERSIST Scholars. (Absences due to conflicts with scheduled course meetings and medical absences with written documentation will be excused.) The student also must complete all required PERSIST paperwork (including surveys) in a timely manner.

6.  The student may not work more than 15 hours per week in work study or outside employment (combined) during the academic semester.
