Title: Int'l Research Experience at University of Cape Coast, Ghana (Africa)

The University of Florida invites students to participate in its NSF-funded International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana from May through July 2009. The goal of this program is to expand the educational experience of participants through research in ecology, environmental science, and conservation biology in tropical sub-Sahara Africa. Participants will travel with the Program Director to the University of Cape Coast, Ghana during the summer to work on defined research projects under the mentorship of Ghanaian scientists. They will conduct carefully selected projects focusing on ecological studies in the Cape Coast area such as the Kakum National Forest, one of the few virgin forests in Africa. Weekly seminars and workshops, led by Ghanaian professors, will provide participants opportunities to learn beyond their disciplines. Field trips to cultural sites will take place during the weekends. Airfare, room and board will be provided. Participants will receive a stipend at the end of the program.

Additional information and applications are available at http://www.honors.ufl.edu/ucc/. Deadline for receiving applications is January 30 2009.

Title: Summer Intern Program
E-mail: intern@vims.edu
Program URL: http://www.vims.edu/sms/intern/summer.html

SYNOPSIS: The basis of the Summer Intern Program is a highly individualized
research experience for each student coupled with group activities. As an intern in the VIMS/SMS program, students will work closely with a mentor, and often within the context of a research team, to develop an individual project. Depending on the project, the summer may involve lots of 'hands-on' experience in the field or laboratory, or both.
Interns are expected to work with their mentors to develop a project idea in the form of a brief research prospectus, conduct their research, and then present results in a final program that is open to the VIMS community. Interns also prepare a summary research paper that is maintained in the program archives. In some cases, this has been the basis for a subsequent publication in the scientific literature.

Sponsor: The Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve of the Univ of Minnesota

Position: Research Interns

Students are encouraged to apply for three types of positions; 1) Plant community ecology, 2) Wildlife biology, and 3) Environmental education. Most positions run from June through August, but some interns are needed as early as March and some are needed through December. Your educational institution may be able to approve this internship, with an appropriate independent project, for any field biology requirement of your major. Typical work days are eight hours Monday through Friday, however some projects require weekend and evening work. If you are an undergraduate or a newly graduated student with a background or interest in biology, ecology, environmental science, botany, environmental education, wildlife biology, or related field we encourage you to apply. Below are brief descriptions of the three types of positions available:

1. Plant community ecology. We have two large scale projects that require most of our intern resources throughout the summer.

a) BioCON explores the ways in which plant communities respond to environmental changes such as increased nitrogen deposition, increased atmospheric CO2, decreased biodiversity, and altered precipitation patterns.

b) The Big Biodiversity experiment studies how plant diversity affects the rates, dynamics, and stability of ecological processes at the population, community, and ecosystem levels. There are multiple experiments nested within the Big Biodiversity experiment as well, looking at factors such as irrigation and increased temperatures. Throughout the summer we maintain and sample these experiments.

2. Wildlife biology. The starting date will be mid-April to mid-May. The research will look at how harvesting resorted prairies for biofuel affects wildlife, and will survey birds, small mammals, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. Bird survey duties will include identifying birds by sight and sound. Small mammal survey duties include operating Sherman live traps and species identification. Insect survey duties will include methods such as sweep netting and pitfall traps. Additional surveys will require plant identification skills. Duties may go beyond what is listed. The applicant must have a flexible schedule and be willing to work odd hours including weekends and holidays. The position will entail extensive travel throughout the western Minnesota prairie region and requires a valid driver's license.

Title: Summer Field Research

E-mail: email: stuart09@echinaceaproject.org

Program URL: web: http://echinacea.umn.edu

Are you interested in gaining field research experience and learning about the ecology and evolution of plants and plant-animal interactions in fragmented prairie? We are looking for 3-5 summer field researchers for an NSF-funded project on habitat fragmentation of the tallgrass prairie. We are investigating how small plant population size influences inbreeding, demography, pollination, and herbivory in the purple coneflower, Echinacea angustifolia.

This is a great summer internship or co-op for those interested in field biology or conservation research. No experience is necessary, but you must be enthusiastic and hard-working. You will survey natural plant populations, measure plant traits in experimental plots, hand-pollinate plants, observe & collect insects, and assist in all aspects of research. Housing is provided and there is a stipend. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to do an independent project as an REU participant.

If you want more information or wish to apply, please visit this website http://echinacea.umn.edu/ or contact Stuart Wagenius.

Applications due 6 March 2009.
