The PERSIST Scholars Program
The PERSIST Scholars Program (Program to Enhance Retention of Students In Science Trajectories in Biology and Chemistry) is funded by a $600,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to TCNJ. This program was created to increase the retention of economically-disadvantaged students majoring in biology or chemistry at TCNJ. In addition to providing scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year (through the 2012-2013 academic year), the program provides enhanced student support services. (Click on link above for additional details, including application materials.) PLEASE NOTE: The federal grant that supported the PERSIST program has expired. Although we have applied to renew the grant, we have not heard back from the NSF. Therefore, we are unable to say at this point whether or not the PERSIST Scholars Program at TCNJ will continue in the future.
Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship
The 2009 Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program is open to US citizens who will be juniors in the fall of 2009 with a minimum 3.0 cumulative gpa, and majoring in NOAA mission disciplines, including math, engineering, oceanic or environmental sciences, physical and social sciences, or teacher education. Benefits include up to $8,000 in academic assistance per school year for up to two years for the 100 students who will be selected; a 10-week, paid summer internship; and housing subsidy during the summer internship. Benjamin Cummings Allied Health Scholarship
Any student who is currently enrolled or who has taken Anatomy and Physiology or Microbiology in the last two years is eligible to apply. Applicants judged on the basis of two original essays that are submitted. Awardees are obligated to be members of a Student Advisory Board and will take part in focus groups, written reviews, workshops, and campus visits.

Phi Kappa Phi Student-Faculty Research Scholarships
(administered
by TCNJ Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi)
The TCNJ chapter of Phi Kappa Phi awards scholarships each semester
to enable students to become involved in research with a faculty
member.
Support: $400
Deadlines: Early November for Spring Semester, early April for
Fall Semester

Phi Kappa Phi Internship Support Grant Competition
(a nationally
competitive grant; 10 awards annually)
Supports an undergraduate to seek knowledge and experience in his/her
academic field by working outside of the academic setting.
Support: $ 1,000
Eligiblity: Must have at least 56 and no more than 90 semester
hours, with at least one full year remaining in program.
Minimum GPA is 3.5. Internship must be at least 20 hrs/week for at least
6 weeks.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Support Grant Competition
(a nationally
competitive grant; 10 awards annually)
Supports an undergraduate to seek knowledge and experience through
studies abroad.
Support: $ 1,000
Eligiblity: Must have at least 56 and no more than 90 semester hours, with
at least one full year remaining in program.
Minimum GPA is 3.5. Must enroll at an accredited international institution
during the study abroad period.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
(a nationally competitive scholarship;
approximately 300 awarded annually)
Nationally competitive scholarship for students in mathematics,
natural sciences, computer science, or engineering. Not intended
for students going into medicine unless they are going into medical
research.
Support: Up to $ 7,500 for up to two years
Eligibility: Full time students who apply during their sophomore
or junior year (i.e., one or two years before
expected date of graduation)
Deadlines: Letter of intent of Dr. Lovett (lovett@tcnj.edu) by early November;

Sigma Xi Grants-In-Aid of Research
(a nationally competitive award,
500-600 awarded annually)
Provides financial to students to conduct research (covers only
direct costs). Proposals are judged solely on the basis of their
scientific merit.
Eligibility: Students or their faculty mentors must be members
of Sigma Xi.
Support: Up to $1,000. (Eye/visioin research up to $2,500)

NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program
Offers competetive scholarships
to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to
careers in biomedical research. The program is designed to improve
access to education leading to research careers for those who have
had fewer opportunities than others. The program is primarily designed
to provide an incentive for exceptional scholars to pursue biomedical
research careers at NIH.
Eligibility: Applicant must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment
as a full-time student for the 2000-2001 academic
year at an accredited undergraduate institution; must be from disadvantaged
background; GPA of 3.0 or
top 5% of class.
Support: Up to $20,000/academic year

Libbie Hyman Memorial Scholarship
Provides assistance to students
to take courses or to conduct research on invertebrates at a marine,
freshwater, or terrestrial field station.
Eligibility: Intended to help support a FIRST field station experience
for a first or second year graduate students, or
an advanced undergraduate.
Support: About $700

Morris Udall and Stuart Udall Foundation $5,000 Scholarship
One-year scholarships for undergraduates who intend to pursue careers related toa wide spectrum of environmental fields, and to Native American and Alaska Native undergraduate students who intend to pursue careers in health care and tribal public policy. Applicants must be a full-time, matriculated sophomore or junior-level student pursuing a degree, and be committed to a career related to the environment, or to tribal public policy or healthcare; must have a gpa of "B" or better; and be a US citizen, US national, or US permanent resident. Garden Club of America Scholarships
The Garden Club of America provides a wide range of financial support through a variety of specific scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students who wish to pursue summer studies doing field work, research, or classroom work in areas such as botany, horticulture, conservation and or the environment.

Study and Internship in Germany
The SIP Scholarship is a unique opportunity for students to accelerate their personal and intellectual growth and to add invaluable academic and professional credentials to their resume. The program consists of a tuition waiver for a full academic semester at one of the UAS7 universities in Germany, a stipend of 700 Euros per month for one academic semester, and a 6-month internship with a German company or research institute. No German language ability required, and it includes a "life sciences' component, which should include biology.

Microscopy Society of America
Support is provided for scholarships with the intent to foster the educational and research potential of full-time undergraduate students interested in pursuing microscopy as a career or major research tool. Applications for research involving any area of microscopy are suitable for the program. The maximum award is $3,000.
