The Natural History of the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador

Note: Students who will graduate in May, 2013 ARE eligible to participate in the trip, even though it occurs after Commencement.


The Natural History of the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador is a full course divided into two parts.  Students must complete both parts to fulfill the following requirements: It is a Biology Options course that fulfills the Organismal requirement for Biology majors.  For students who are not in the School of Science, it fulfills the requirements for a Natural Science course with a laboratory component in the Liberal Learning Program.  It can be taken for Honors credit by students in the Honors Program.  If fulfills the Global Perspectives Civic Responsibility Liberal Learning requirement.

The course descriptions for the two half-courses are as follows:

  • BIO 365/ HON 365/ IDS 365 The Natural History of the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador I:  

An introduction to the natural history (including ecology of plants and animals, geology, and climate) of the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador, with a reflection on interactions between these and the history, culture and economics of the Islands and Ecuador from pre-colonial to modern times.  Offered during spring semester.  (Students must also enroll in BIO 366/ HON 366/IDS 366, which will be offered during Maymester of the same year.)  This course will be offered in Spring Semester, 2013.

  • BIO 366/ HON 366/ IDS 366 The Natural History of the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador II:

An immersion experience to develop a deep understanding of the natural history (including geology, climate, and ecology of plants and animals) of the Galapagos Islands and mainland Ecuador, with a reflection on interactions between these and the history, culture and economics of the Islands and Ecuador from pre-colonial to modern times.  Offered during Maymester.  (Limited to students who will participate in the faculty-led abroad experience—a two-week, intensive trip to the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador.) The dates for the trip are May 24-June 7, 2013.
