Commonly Asked Advising Questions

Fall 2009

What is IDS 102?

IDS 102 is a zero-credit online tutorial that ALL incoming freshmen and transfer students which involves locating, evaluating and using information for academic research.  The course runs from August 25 through October 13, 2009 and is graded P/U. Students can access the Links Tutorials here: http://www.tcnj.edu/~liblinks/

What is IDS 103?

IDS 103 tracks the “community engaged learning” requirement of liberal learning.  Students satisfy this requirement by participating in FSPs that include a service-learning component in the fall semester, or in one of the many issue-based Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Days that are scheduled throughout the year.

How do I know if I am exempt from WRI 102?

Students are exempt from WRI 102 if they have met ANY of the following criteria:

  • Score of 580 in BOTH SAT Reading and SAT Math
  • Score of (4) on AP English or History
  • TCNJ Writing Placement

If a student is required to take WRI 102, they will take it in the Spring of their freshmen year.

What requirements did my AP credit fulfill?

AP credit will appear on a student’s advisement report, but you can always consult the AP legend: http://www.tcnj.edu/~recreg/policies/documents/AP2009-2010.pdf pdf icon

I took MAT 127 Calculus. Do I need to retake MAT 125 Calculus for Business?

No. If a student took MAT 127 (or the equivalent through AP or transfer credit), then he or she has satisfied the School of Business Calculus requirement.

I took STA 115. Do I need to retake STA 215?

Students that enter TCNJ as business majors are required to take STA 215 Statistical Inference. However, students that have taken STA 115 as a non-business major and wish to enter the School of Business in a subsequent semester are not required to retake STA 215.

My FSP is a science. Does that mean I have fulfilled my liberal learning science requirement?

No. Business majors are required to fulfill a natural science with a LAB. FSP courses do not satisfy the lab requirement.

Can I take courses at other schools?

Yes! For students interesting in taking courses at their local NJ community colleges, www.njtransfer.org will provide course equivalencies. No “approval” is needed if courses are listed on this site. Students can take liberal learning, electives and introductory business courses (ECO 101, ECO 102, ACC 201, and the ½ courses) at community colleges.

Out-of-state community colleges and other 4-year institutions require a “course authorization” (a Records and Registration form).  Students may receive approval for upper-level business courses ONLY from other AACSB schools.  Chairs will sign off on major requirements and Records and Registration will approve liberal learning and electives.

Students must receive a “C” or better in order to transfer a course. The grade will not appear on a student’s TCNJ transcript or factor into his or her GPA.

Can I take a class Pass/Fail?

Students in good academic standing and who have completed at least 8 course units at TCNJ are permitted to enroll in one “Ungraded Option” course per semester. At completion of the course, the student must earn a passing grade to receive credit. The transcript will reflect a designation of either CRD (Credit) or NCR (No Credit).  A student must designate a course as “Ungraded Option” within the first two weeks of the semester.  At the end of the semester, instructors submit regular letter grades, and these grades are converted into either CRD or NCR by the Office of Records and Registration.

Students can ONLY take free electives as “ungraded” (no major, minor or liberal learning requirements).

Can I repeat a course at another school?

Students must repeat courses at TCNJ in order to remove poor grades from their GPA. Students should file a “repetition of course” form and file it with Records and Registration.

How do I know what I still need?

Either the advisor or the student can find the advisement report on PAWS under “Other Academics,” and then selecting “Academic Requirements.”  The advisement report will let the student know what courses will satisfy liberal learning requirements and courses for the major/minor/concentration.

Also, both the advisor and the student are able to run a “What if Report” (located on this same menu) if you would like to see what the requirements would be for a different major or minor.

How do I declare/change my major/specialization?

Applications are accepted between September 14 and October 2 for the fall and February 15 and March 1 for the spring. Students will be notified by email regarding their applications within two weeks of the deadline.  More information regarding the applications can be found here: https://www.tcnj.edu/~business/TCNJBusinessMajor.html

  • Second ¼ course - November 13

I need to withdraw from all of my classes this semester. How do I do this?

How do I study abroad?

Students are encouraged to explore the Study Abroad website early to get a sense of where they might like to study. The abroad site lists the countries/schools with which TCNJ has partnerships. By looking at particular schools, students can get a sense of what type of courses the abroad school typically offers. Students can take liberal learning, major courses, and electives abroad as long as they have been pre-approved by the department. More information about deadlines, programs, information sessions, students can visit: http://www.tcnj.edu/~goglobal/undergraduate/index.html

Can I change my advisor?

Students who wish to change their advisor should talk to the chair of their major/Coordinator of Student Services to discuss their concerns. If deemed appropriate, a new advisor will be assigned.

Do advisors need to post specific advising hours?

It is up to the individual advisor how they wish to handle their advising hours. As registration approaches, advisors may set up appointments via email, phone or posted signup sheets outside of their offices, but their policy should be communicated to the student early in the semester.

How do I apply for graduation?

Students must apply for graduation using PAWS. There are three graduation times each school year: May, August and December. May applications are due in January, August applications are due in February and December applications are due in September. Students finishing in August are permitted to walk in the May commencement ceremony. There are no ceremonies in August and December.
