School of Business Advising Resource Book 2009-2010

Introduction

In order to gain the maximum benefit from your time at The College of New Jersey, understanding your curriculum requirements is key. This Academic Resource Handbook is intended to provide you with a plan and information on academic and career resources during your years at The College. Students who take advantage of the various advising resources are more likely to achieve their goals than students who do not. Through academic and career advisement at the departmental and college level, you will receive direction and guidance to help you make decisions about your academic goals at TCNJ and your plans after graduation.

How to Use This Guide

This Advising Resource Handbook should not be used as an exclusive item. The information in this guide has been constructed so that you can plan your academic career in conjunction with the other resources available to you at The College, such as:

The College of New Jersey Undergraduate Bulletin. The Bulletin is your contract with The College. It is an encyclopedia of information about the school, covering everything you need to know from freshman year to graduation. Some of the most useful sections are the course descriptions, TCNJ Policies and Procedures, General Education Requirements, and information regarding the Honors Program. The Bulletin can be found online at: http://www.tcnj.edu/~bulletin/

The College of New Jersey Student Handbook. The Handbook provides information about your rights and responsibilities as a student. Spend some time reading the sections on grades, attendance and excused absences, and other important matters that will affect you. The Student Handbook is only available online at: http://www.tcnj.edu/~studlife/handbook/

Office of Records and Registration. The Office of Records and Registration lists the courses that are offered for each term and important information on registration and payment deadlines for the semester. It also contains a calendar with important dates. VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!! Visit the Office of Records and Registration at: http://www.tcnj.edu/~recreg/

The School of Business Home Page. The School’s web site provides a wealth of information for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community regarding all news and events in the School. The School’s web site is: http://www.tcnj.edu/~business/

The Course Syllabus. The Syllabus is an agreement between the faculty member and the student. It describes the dates the class will meet, topics to be covered, how the instructor will evaluate your performance, attendance policies, your instructor's office hours and how you can contact your instructor outside of class. It will also provide you with information on grading, what will be expected of you as a member of the class, what books must be read, papers written, presentations given, and other information. Make sure to keep all of your syllabi!
