The Application for Graduate School

Timeline

It will typically take one full year from the start of researching programs to the day that you start graduate classes. In other words, if you want to attend the fall after you graduate, then you should begin the application process the summer between your junior year and senior years, or at the latest, the fall of your senior year. Deadlines generally range between fall & spring. Note: There is a cost - both application & test fees (e.g. $50-$200 per test) so keep this in mind when you're planning.

Essay

Most applications will ask you to include a personal statement, statement of purpose or to write an essay addressing a question or issue in the field. It is highly recommended that you begin conceptualizing and writing this early. Career Counselors are available to provide a critique (by appointment) of your essays.

Pointers on writing the essay:

  • Start early, write a draft and then leave it alone for awhile. Go back fesh & make edits.
  • Have several people, including a professor and/or the Writing Center, give you feedback on the essay. Contact our office to set up an appointment with a Career Counselor.
  • Be sure that you answer the question(s).
  • Be original in your approach if possible.
  • All essays are looking to find out two broad things: will you be a strong student in their program? And will you add to the field in general, upon graduation?
