Programs

Capitalize when using the formal name.

Honors Program, Educational Opportunity Fund Program

If there is a commonly used acronym, add it in parentheses just after the first reference. On second reference, the acronym may be used, or the program, lowercased.

The Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Program is located in Forcina Hall. About 310 students are enrolled in the program.

Quotation Marks

In regular text, commas and periods always go inside an end quotation mark (").

“If the meeting is tomorrow,” said Professor Jones, “I won't be able to attend.”

With colons, semi-colons, question marks, and exclamation points, quotation marks are placed according to whether the punctuation mark is part of the quoted passage.

Quoted material that runs four lines or longer is usually set as an indented extract (block quotation). Quotation marks are not used with indented extracts unless they occur within the quoted material.

Use “curly” quotation marks (also known as smart quotes) in your publications. To do this, from the “Tools” pull-down menu, select “Auto Correct.” In the “Auto Correct” box, click the “Auto Format as You Type” tab, and then check the box marked “Replace as You Type—‘Straight Quotes’ with ‘Smart Quotes.’” The “straight” quotation mark ("), also called the double prime, is used for denoting inches.

Rankings

Designate rankings as No. 1. Do not use the number (#) sign.

The football team was ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Residence Halls

Residence halls is the preferred term (rather than dorms) in formal copy.

TCNJ Library

Use TCNJ Library on first reference; use the library for second reference.

Schools

The full names of the College's schools are always capitalized.

The School of Nursing was founded in 1966. She teaches in the School of Engineering.

On second reference, the school may be used, lowercased.

Do not use The School or the School alone.

Seasons

Lowercase references to seasons and academic periods. Capitalize only when part of a formal name.

spring, fall semester, Winter Olympics
Spacing

When typing documents on a typewriter, people were taught to leave two spaces after the punctuation ending a sentence. When preparing documents on a computer, though, leave only one space between sentences. The word processing program will automatically insert enough space to make the passage easy to read.

States

Spell out the names of states when they stand alone in text.

Our neighbors like to vacation in North Carolina.

Use the correct two-letter postal abbreviation when a state is listed with a city.

The seminar took place in Dover, DE.

It is not always necessary to include the state with the city name when a well-known city is named.

The meeting will be held in San Francisco.

TCNJ Board of Trustees

Use The College of New Jersey Board of Trustees on first reference. Use board of trustees, board, or trustees on subsequent references. Always lowercase the word trusteesand the board if used alone.

The members of the board of trustees met at 4 P.M.

TCNJ Foundation

Use TCNJ Foundation on first reference. Use the foundation on second reference.

Telephone Numbers

TCNJ style is to write telephone numbers with a dot following the third and sixth digits. Do not use parentheses or a hyphen to separate the area code and the telephone number.

609.771.1855, not
(609) 771-1855
or
609-771-1855

P) 609.771.2368

E) cfriedma@tcnj.edu

Always call phone numbers listed in your publications or on your Web pages as part of the proofreading process.

Terminal Degree

Theater

Use the spelling established and used by departments, clubs, or organizations in their titles. In all other usage, use the spelling theater.

TCNJ Opera Theatre, The performance will be in the main theater of Kendall Hall.
