On January 16, Lakehurst lawyer Robert Novy presented President R. Barbara Gitenstein and representatives from the College with a symbolic check in the amount of $1,339,000 from the estate of Mary Myketiuk ’34. Once the details are worked out, the College expects to provide up to five scholarships a year worth up to half the cost of tuition to School of Education students who qualify on the basis of financial need and academic standing.
Kiplinger's Personal Finance recently released its ranking of the nation's top 100 values in public higher education, and The College of New Jersey took the #19 spot out of more than 500 eligible colleges and universities.
The College of New Jersey will be presented with three awards from the Council of Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in February for its efforts during the 1855-2005 Sesquicentennial Celebration.
Teresa San Pedro, associate professor of Spanish, served on the 2005 panel of judges for the Ricardo Miró National Literature Award in Panama. San Pedro, originally from Spain, was chosen as a judge for the essay category of the prestigious prize. Her expertise is in the area of 20th century Central American Literature.
As part of the College’s recognition of AIDS Awareness Week, the Department of Communications Studies sponsored a talk by David Gelber, executive producer for the Ed Bradley Unit, which produces news segments for CBS’s “60 Minutes.”
Several years ago, Gelber and his team spent five months in Africa, reporting on the continent’s AIDS epidemic, which he compared to the “black plague.”
The 17th annual TCNJ Holiday, one of the College’s largest community service projects of the year, was held on December 6, 2005. The event, which was sponsored by the Student Government Association in partnership with the College Union Board and Leadership Development Program, began on the steps of Green Hall where representatives from various religious and multicultural organizations spoke about the many holidays that are celebrated by students around campus.
The College of New Jersey will serve as the host site for the 2006 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on March 3-4.
