TCNJ Chemistry Instrumentation

Instrument Descriptions

  • Perkin Elmer LS50B Luminescence Spectrometer: The LS50B can perform fluorescence, phosphorescence, chemiluminescence, and bioluminescence analyses. It is equipped with a xenon arc lamp source, excitation and emission monochromators, and a photomultiplier. The delay time can be set as low as 0.1ms. The wavelength accuracy is +/- 1.0nm.
  • Perkin Elmer Spectrum RX-1 Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometer: The RX-1 is a rugged, reliable, and fully-integrated instrument that can achieve spectral resolution of better than 0.8cm-1. It has sealed and desiccated optics that rest on a vibration-controlled bench. The instrument is equipped with a patented Dynascan interferometer.
  • Perkin Elmer 3300 Atomic Absorption Spectrometer: The PE 3300 is equipped with a deuterium lamp for background correction, motorized 4-lamp carousel, flame burner, and air/acetylene burner head. Currently, the instrument has sodium, potassium, and calcium lamps.
  • Varian Cary 100 Ultraviolet/Visible Spectrophotometer: The Cary 100 has a phase locked wavelength drive, double choppers, centralized accessory control, and quartz-coated, sealed optics. Variable slits allow the spectral bandwidth to be set as low as 0.2nm. The instrument has a working range higher than 3.5 absorbance units. Currently, both of our Cary 100 instruments are equipped with 6 x 6 multicell holders and temperature controller accessories. Our newer instrument also has a temperature probe accessory.
  • Varian EM360 60 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer (Upgraded to an Anasazi Instruments EFT-60 Fourier Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer): Our continuous wave Varian EM360 was upgraded to a pulsed, Fourier transform instrument by Anasazi Instruments. The EFT-60 is equipped with a dual channel (C/H) probe. It can perform 1-D proton, 1-D carbon 13, T1, COSY, DEPT, and HETCOR measurements.
  • Varian Gemini 300 300MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer: The Gemini 300 can perform 1-D proton, 1-D carbon 13, COSY, DEPT, NOESY, and HETCOR measurements. It is equipped with a temperature controller.
  • Jasco J810 Spectropolarimeter (Circular Dichroism System): The J810 Circular Dichroism System conducts measurements from 163-1100 nm. The instrument's response to scan speed and signal is optimized automatically. Low stray light (0.0003%) allows for high reproducibility. The J810 is typically used to determine protein or DNA conformation. Currently, this instrument is used for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry research.
  • Beckman DU64 Spectrophotometer: The DU64 is a scanning single beam spectrometer that can perform absorbance and % transmittance measurements. It has a range of 200-900 nm and a bandpass of ~1.8 nm. Currently, all three of our instruments are dedicated to General Chemistry laboratory use.
  • Beckman DU530 Ultraviolet/Visible Spectrophotometer: The DU530 is a scanning single beam spectrometer that can perform absorbance and % transmittance measurements. It has a range of 190-1100 nm, wavelength accuracy of +/- 1 nm, spectral bandwidth of <4.5 nm, resolution of 0.2 nm, and scan speed of 40-1000 nm/minute. Currently, this instrument is dedicated to Forensic Chemistry applications.
  • Shimadzu UV-1201 Ultraviolet/Visible Spectrophotometer: The UV-1201 DU530 is a scanning single beam spectrometer that can perform absorbance and % transmittance measurements. It has a range of 200-1100 nm (in 0.1 nm increments), wavelength accuracy of +/- 1 nm, and spectral bandwidth of 5 nm. Currently, this instrument is dedicated to General Chemistry laboratory use.
  • Ocean Optics USB Ultraviolet/Visible Integrated Sampling System equipped with USB 2000 Miniature Fiber Optic Spectrometer: The USB UV/VIS Integrated Sampling System has a sample holder for 1 cm cuvettes and a deuterium/tungsten lamp with a range of 200-1100 nm. The USB 2000 Spectrometer has a 2048-element linear CCD-array detector. The entire unit can fit in the palm of your hand.
  • Bruker P4 X-Ray Diffractometer: The P4 instrument is used to collect diffraction data from single crystals. It is equipped with a goniometer control system and a CCD detector. Currently, this instrument is used for Inorganic Chemistry research.
  • Applied Biosystems Voyager-DE Mass Spectrometer: The Voyager-DE is a matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometer. The ionization source is equipped with a 337 nm nitrogen laser. The time-of-flight mass analyzer allows for measurements over a very large mass range. Currently, this instrument is dedicated to Forensic Chemistry applications.
  • Hewlett Packard 1050 Liquid Chromatograph: All three of our HP 1050 instruments are equipped with variable wavelength detectors and quaternary pumps. Two have autosamplers, while one has a fluorescence detector. The chromatographs are controlled by TurboChrom software.
  • Pickering Laboratories PCX 3100 Post Column Reaction Module: The PCX 3100 is used in conjunction with an HPLC system to perform post-column reactions. The module allows for the compounds present in HPLC column eluent to react with one post-column reagent. The products are then analyzed again, typically by HPLC.
  • Dionex Bio LC Liquid Chromatograph: The Bio LC is equipped with an ED50A electrochemical detector, GS50 gradient pump, and AS50 autosampler. This instrument is particularly useful for the analysis of biological molecules by ion chromatography. Currently, the Bio LC is dedicated to Analytical Chemistry research.
  • Shimadzu 8A Gas Chromatograph: Each of our 8A gas chromatographs has two on-column isothermal injection ports, manual gas flow control, a thermal conductivity detector, and analog output. No temperature ramp programming is available for the column oven (i.e. all analyses are isothermal).
  • Agilent Capillary Electrophoresis System: The Agilent CE is equipped with a temperature controlled autosampler and a diode array detector. It offers a wide linear range, off-line buffer replenishment, and self-correcting pressure injection.
  • Varian 3900 Gas Chromatograph: Each of our 3900 gas chromatographs has one CP-1177 split/splitless injector, a thermal conductivity detector, and electronic flow control. One of our instruments also has a CP-8410 autoinjector.
  • Varian Saturn 2000 Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer: This instrument consists of a CP 3800 gas chromatograph coupled to a Saturn 2000 mass spectrometer. The CP 3800 is equipped with an 8200 autosampler. The Saturn 2000 has an electron impact (EI) ionization source and an ion trap mass analyzer. It also has one low pressure liquid chemical ionization (CI) module.
  • Hewlett Packard 5970 Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer: This instrument consists of a HP 5890 gas chromatograph coupled to a HP 5970 Mass Selective Detector. The HP 5890 has one isothermal injection port and no autosampler. The HP 5970 has an electron impact (EI) ionization source and a single quadrupole mass analyzer.
  • Perkin Elmer System 2000 Gas Chromatograph-Infrared Spectrometer: This instrument consists of an Autosystem gas chromatograph coupled to a System 2000 Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR). The FT-IR is equipped with a mid-IR source. Higher resolution is achieved on this instrument compared with our RX-1 instruments.
  • Perkin Elmer Pyris 6 Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA): This instrument is equipped with automatic gas switching and flow control, a top-loading balance housed in stainless steel, and a corrosion-resistant furnace. It also has very fast heat-up and cool-down times.
  • Perkin Elmer Pyris 6 Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC): This instrument is equipped with automatic gas switching and flow control, a low-mass durance, and hardened nickel chromium disks in the sample compartment. The low-mass furnace allows for fast heating and cooling speeds.
  • Princeton Applied Research Model 394 Electrochemical Trace Analyzer (ETA): This instrument is used for performing polarographic and voltammetric experiments. It offers eight modes of analysis: square wave voltammetry, differential pulse polarography, normal pulse polarography, sampled DC polarography, square wave stripping voltammetry, differential pulse stripping, DC stripping linear sweep voltammetry, and cyclic staircase voltammetry.
  • Spencer Microscope: Both of our microscopes are equipped with 0.67X, 1X, 1.5X, 2X, and 2.5X objectives. One has 10X WF eyepieces, while the second has 15X WF eyepieces. These microscopes do not have built-in illuminators, but a Cole Parmer Model 41500-50 Fiber Optic Illuminator is typically used. Currently, these microscopes are dedicated to Forensic Chemistry applications.
  • Meiji Techno ML9400 Series Polarizing Microscope: This microscope is equipped with the following: HWF 10X and HWF 10XF eyepieces with reticle; SM Plan 4X, 10X, and 40XS objectives; a graduated 360° rotatable stage with vernier; Abbe condenser NA1.25 with iris, holder, and blue filter; rotatable polarizer with analyzer; Bertrand lens with sliding mount; Koehler Halogen illuminator; and Incident Halogen illuminator. Currently, this microscope is dedicated to Forensic Chemistry applications.
  • Reichert Scientific Instruments MicroStar Microscope: The Microstar is a dual binocular microscope with 2.5X, 4X, & 40X Plan Achro Objectives and four 10XWF eyepieces. Currently, this microscope is dedicated to Forensic Chemistry applications.
  • Motic B3 Professional Series Microscope: This microscope is equipped with the following: WF 10X paired eyepieces; Plan PL4X, PL10X, PL40X, and PL100X objectives; quintuple nosepiece; coaxial course and fine focusing adjustment; low position coaxial mechanical stage; focusable 1.25 Abbe condenser; iris diaphragm with 32mm blue filter; and Koehler Halogen illuminator with intensity control. Currently, this microscope is dedicated to Forensic Chemistry applications.
  • Leitz Laborlux D Microscope: This microscope is equipped with the following: two stages, periplan 10X eyepieces; NPL Fluotar 10X, 25X, 40X, and 100X objectives; condenser; iris; and built-in illuminator. Currently, this microscope is dedicated to Forensic Chemistry applications.
  • Vac Nexus Glove Box: This glove box has two glove ports, a large antechamber, a mini antechamber, a single gas purifier with 0-40 CFM blower, manual isolation valves, and an evacuatable glove port cover. Purifier regeneration, lab pressure, antechamber evacuation, and antechamber refill are computer controlled.
  • Vac Omni-Lab Glove Box: This glove box has two glove ports, a large antechamber, a single gas purifier with a single speed blower, manual isolation valves, and an evacuatable glove port cover. Purifier regeneration and lab pressure are computer controlled, while antechamber evacuation and refill are manually controlled.
  • Buchi Rotavapor R-200 Rotary Evaporator: Each R-200 Rotavapor has a PTFE/glass sealing system, under-pan heating element and insulated heating bath. These rotary evaporators are also equipped with PTFE diaphragm vacuum pumps, vacuum controllers, and recirculating chillers.
