Internship Requirements

Steps for Completing an Internship Proposal:

1) Determine whether or not you are eligible to apply for a Communication Studies internship. In order to apply for an internship, you must meet the following prerequisites:

• Minimum GPA of 2.5
• Junior status or higher
• Sponsorship by faculty member
• Submission to and Approval of an Internship Proposal
• Communication Studies Major
• Variable credit –1-2 Units(maximum credits to be determined at the college Level)
• 160 work hours per unit
• May be repeated for elective credit outside major

2) Obtain from your prospective internship supervisor /employer a letter of intent to “hire” or supervise. The letter of intent must be on organization/company letterhead, and must include the following information:

a) Name of Supervisor
b) Supervisor’s phone #
c) Title of Internship
d) Your duties as an intern
e) Average # of hours a week you will work
f) Dates of supervision/employment

3) Fill out attached Internship Enrollment Form

4) Meet with your faculty sponsor to review and revise your proposal

5) Submit completed package to the Chair of the Department by due date (December 1 for Spring Internships; April 15 for Summer Internships ; May 1 for Fall Internships).

A completed package includes the following documents:

• Complete Internship Proposal
• Letter of intent to supervise/hire from prospective supervisor/employer

6) After Department approval, deliver approved proposal to Records and Registration as soon as possible. The deadline for delivering the proposal to Records and Registration is the last day of drop/add period ( the end of the fist week of classes in the semester in which you are registering for the Internship.)
