TCNJ's Greatest Liabilities

Graduation Date: 5/1/2004 Major Code: MATA
Living in an atmosphere
(like NJ) where the general public tends to be intelligent and open minded.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2004 Major Code: MATT
I had a poor student
teaching experience. My cooperating teachers were irresponsible and not
helpful. I feel there needs to be more thorough
screening of cooperating
teachers, and evaluations that TCNJ students make of their cooperating teachers
should be given serious consideration. I
also think that during student teaching our
supervisors should check more thoroughly on what the student teacher's
responsibilities are at the
school they are at. For
example, I was assigned to teach more classes than the teachers who were under
contract at the school were.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2004 Major Code: MATA
If anything, I would say
I might lack a certain computer literacy since computer work wasn't included as
much as I had expected in my courses at
TCNJ. A more specific
result is discussed in my response to quesiton 6.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2004 Major Code: MATC
I went into college
hoping to graduate 4 years later knowing exactly what I would want to do for
the rest of my life. Some of those
questions were
answered, howeer, I am
still working on the others.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2004 Major Code: MATC
My greatest liability
currently is the fact that I still view myself as a college student. Being one
of only a couple new hires at work currently, this
results in my feeling
like an outsider, someone who dosen't know anything compared to the people I
work with.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2004 Major Code: MATT
None that I can think of.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2004 Major Code: MATT
see question 2. Also, I was fortunate to take the Special
Education course "Exceptional Populations in Society" my first
semester (Fall 2000), but I
think that ALL education
majors (elementary, secondary, music ed,
etc.) should be required to take it.
Also, since I took it my first semestr, I have
not retained much of the
info about laws and such that schools expect me to know.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2004 Major Code: MATT
I really didn’t learn a
lot about educational theory at TCNJ since I was a secondary educaiton major.
This hurt me during some job interviews when
people asked me quesitons
about it.

I don't like the
transformation because you don't have the opportunity to take as many
classes. There really was no extra work
assigned to do outside
of class so I feel like
students were hurting from it.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATT
I think that registration
week could be run more smoothly. There
always seemed to be some hassle with getting the classes and the schedule that
one wanted.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: ELMA
I felt that the food was
horrible.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATA
The school just seemed to
get a little boring as the years went on for some reason.

Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATT
I feel that all students
at TCNJ miss out on a social growth aspect at TCNJ. Because the campus is cut-off from the
outside community there isn't a
warm feeling around town towards the
students. Even after joining
organizations to work on this issue that many students feel exists I was
discouraged after finding
out how many people at the College and in the community are unwillining to
remedy this problem.

Costs-fees that never
even applied to my college esperience, (ie student center, stduent activites,
etc), construction, lack of parking
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATA
Overworking. I think that there is a balance, and tcnj is
real close to tipping the scale if they haven't already.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATT
Some of the education
classes I was required to take seems pointless and a waste of time.

I have to question some
of the administration's decisions of how they spend their money and how much
they actually care about the students after
we've chosen to
attend. Logo, apartments, carte
blanche...all horribly dealt with during just 3-4 years.

Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATT
I can't think of any
classes that would HINDER my future success, but there were several classes I
felt were useless and a waste of time--
particularly several of
the 200-level education classes.
Sophomore Experience meant visiting a ton of schools to observe
(but-um-we've been
'observers' in the
classroom for our entire lives), and then listening to a professor lecture to
us about the importance of communication (verbal, non-
verbal, and
environmental). This is just one example
of a nonsense class that was common sense--and if people couldn't figure out
how to
communicate by the time
they are in college, they probably have other issues all together!
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATT
I keep saying it, but one
of the worst things was experiencing the transformation. Too many people were
confused and everyone had different
answers to the same
questions.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATT
I dont really know of

Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATT
I did not see the point
in the Athens to NY class or SET class.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATA
Not enough interaction
with other people that are different from me.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATT
It is a suitcase school,
so it is difficult to find things to do on the weekends.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATA
TCNJ's transformative
change half-way through my time there adversely affected me. I feel that most classes did not contain the
increased
workload or challenge
that was desired by the school.
Students' ability to explore many disciplines was sadly limited. Significant course material
had to be discarded in
keeping with the changes (particularly in combining Abstract Algebra I and II
into a single class). Furthermore, I
found many
of the general education classes I took to be
unfocused and lacking in challenge.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATA
Outside of the nation's
capital, I doubt that thicker red tape can be found anywhere else in the
country. Administrative departments are difficult, if not
impossible to deal with.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2005 Major Code: MATA
Overall, I had problems
getting along with the student body at TCNJ.

The transformation of the
curriculum was a large negative. It didn't allow us any room to take elective
courses and explore things we may have had
an interest in.

Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
I thought it would be
much harder to get good grades in college.
At times, I felt many classes were too easy for TCNJ to be considering
itself 'a
public Ivy.'
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
Personally, the housing
and scheduling was horrible. The hoops
that I had to go through for housing was so frustrating and I got screwed so
many
times. Also I feel that I was not firmly prepared
when it comes to teaching high school mathematics. That was the worst major class that I had.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
My only complaint is that
the transition from mostly 3 credit classes to mostly 4 credit classes made it
very difficult to graduate on time.
Luckly I had
a great advisor, but if I
didn't I think that this would have been even more difficult than it already
was.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
TCNJ is poor in the
department of student services, and in being organized with campus
developments. It was always a
dissapointment that
construction projects
would take months and then simply no be finished. I also think that I didn't get a strong
enough background in education for my
major.
I took an large number of mathematics classes but few education based
classes which was detremental to my teaching.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
There were many issues
with housing (dorms being incomplete) and scheduling (due to transformation)
that caused many headaches. The food
was not always
consumable.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
I would say that the
worst things about TCNJ were the food and the housing issues (namely the
situation with the apartments).
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
TCNJ housing. TCNj was unable to complete their apartments
and didn't keep students up to date with the process.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
I don't really have
anything bad to say about TCNJ except the food was bad.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
I wish I had gained a
stronger pedagogy in education.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
Course schedules -
difficult to understand when college was going through transition w/courses
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATA
I think sometimes TCNJ
worries too much about being a public ivy then worrying about what's best for
the students.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATA
The food was mediocre at
best. The construction of the 'new'
apartments supposedly new as of fall 2004 are still not built. No liabilities I can
recognize.

Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
My only complaints are
minor probably because of my field. I only wish that i had been encouraged to
pursue mathematics earlier as well as the
education aspects of
math. It's just hard to find that balance when the education-related things
take up so much.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATA
The honors program could
use a little improvement, specifically by offering honors courses in more
departments (i.e. math), so that honors
students aren't forced to
take courses that they have no interest in in order to meet the requirements.

They created situations
where I needed to actively voice discontent towards established
institutions. An active discontent
towards this school.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATA
I hate the lottery system
and how much it screwed me over with housing.
Graduation Date: 5/1/2006 Major Code: MATA
Aside from the things I
stated in 1b, the campus was pretty not diverse, and since I come from a
diverse area, the general atmosphere was boring
sometimes.
Graduation Date: 8/1/2006 Major Code: MATA
The worst thing about
TCNJ is the community. There are so many sororities, fraternities, and so
little people that go out to the good events on
campus. The only
liability I have, is that I haven't had to write any papers in college. The
longest I've written is a seven page paper and I'm headed
into a program where I
will be writing 25 page papers.
Graduation Date: 8/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
TCNJ needs to spend more
time advising students on topics such as course selections and how to graduate
on time.
Graduation Date: 12/1/2006 Major Code: ELMA
Registering for classes
can be very frustrating, especially for first year students. Although many improvements have been made
while I attended the
school, it can still be made easier.
Graduation Date: 12/1/2006 Major Code: MATT
Changing to the unit
system. Eliminating a more diverse core of classes.
