CSC399: Presentation

General Guidelines

• In principle, students must satisfy the presentation requirement by the end of the semester in which they are registered (see the end of this page for important notes regarding summer registration). In addition, students are in general required to evaluate other students' presentation.
• As in the paper requirements, students must clearly state their problems and responses in their presentation.
• Regarding the mode of presentation, there will be three cases [this will be changed for the students entering after Fall 2004], depending on how many of either internship or mentored research courses you have taken; that is, for the purpose of identifying the presentation requirement, internship and research are indistinguishable.
  • If this is your first experience, you will present a poster.
  • If this is your second experience, you will present orally (platform).
  • If you take both internship and mentored research during a single semester, you will need to designate one as a poster and the other as a platform presentation. Consult the research mentor and inform your decision to both the research mentor and internship supervisor early in the semester.
  • If you have completed at least two courses in this category, you will be exempt from presentation, unless the faculty supervisor requires it.

• Presentations are in general within the last few weeks of the semester you are registered.
• Note that your presentation is not a description of the company you worked for. Keep this information to the minimum.

Confidentiality [IMPORTANT]

• When you prepare your presentation, you must honor the confidentiality agreement between your employer and yourself. As soon as you start preparing your presentation, consult your on-site professional about what you can write. To protect yourself, you should obtain permision of the on-site professional (preferably in writing) before submiting any draft of your presentation to the faculty internship supervisor.

Standard Timeline

Poster Preparation Guidelines

• In your poster, you must have Introduction and Conclusion including the three components, as in your paper (see the paper preparation page).
• The recommended tools for preparing a poster are PowerPoint and a large format printer (42 inch max) at the Instructional Technology Services in Forcina Hall 111. An example procedure would be as follows:
  • Purchase a poster board (e.g., at the TCNJ Bookstore, Triangle on US1 in Lawrenceville, a large art store). One of the standard poster board sizes is 22 x 28 (inch). However, you may use a larger size, e.g., 32 x 40.
  • Create a single-page new PowerPoint file. Set the paper size based on your poster board. Store your poster on your H drive or under the "www" directory so that it can be accessed remotely.
  • Print the poster in FH 111. It is recommended that you laminate your poster.
  • TEMPORARILY mount your poster on the poster board, e.g., using tape. The reason it must be mounted temporary is that your poster can be removed from the board and placed on the walls on the second floor of Holman Hall.

• The faculty supervisor will comment on your first and subsequent poster drafts. You must revise your poster in a timely manner so that you can turn in as required. You must have your poster approved for the final presentation to get the credits for your internship experience.

Platform Presentation Guidelines

• In your presentation, you must have Introduction and Conclusion including the three components, as in your paper (see the paper preparation page). Consider the following slide sequence:
  • Title
  • Background
  • Problem/Response
  • <other slides>
  • Conclusion (including results, significance, and future directions)
• The recommended tool for preparing a platform presentation is PowerPoint. Here is a guidelines:
  • Practice multiple times so that you can finish within the designated time. The host or the faculty internship supervisor will terminate your presentation when the time comes. You must respect the overall scheduling process and also the presenters after you.
  • Limit the number of slides to one slide per minute (e.g., 15 slides max for a 15-minute presentation).
  • Store your PowerPoint file under the "www" directory so that it can be accessed remotely, without logging in to your Novell account.
• The faculty supervisor will comment on your first and subsequent presentation files. You must revise your paper in a timely manner so that you can turn in as required. You must have your draft approved for the final submission to get the credits for your internship experience in a timely manner.

Paper Submission Requirements

Summer Registration

• If you are registered for a summer session and you are graduating that summer, you must give a presentation by the end of the last day of the session you are registered. A special presentation opportunity will be arranged.
• If you are registered for a summer session and you are not graduating that summer, the following possibilities exist:
  • If you give a presentation by the end of the last day of the session you are registered (and other requirements are also completed by that time), you may be able to receive a grade for that session.
  • Otherwise, you must give a presentation by the end of the following fall semester. However, in this case, you will receive an "in progress" (IP) for the summer session. This can eventually be changed to a passing grade at the end of the fall semester once all the requirements are satisfied.
