Yuu shall conform!

One of uss...one of uss...

“Welcome to Yuutopia, where the grass is always #7AC311!

Yuu’ll love it here. It’s the perfect, ideal society. Yuu’ll find that everything runs smoothly here…just as long as everyone minds theirr proper place.”

This Spring, the Games II class has been working on a 2D RPG called Super Character's Name Land (SCNL for short). The focus of the game is to be a parody of popular video game culture. The main character gets sucked into a video game world, but refuses to play by its conventions, to the frustration of the local inhabitants. For example, the game uses a turn-based battle system, but the main character does not understand why he has to wait his turn to attack.

There a number of features and components in the game that make it different from the average 2D RPG's that it mocks. The humor is the primary focus, most of the dialogue in the game is devoted to it, as are many of the gameplay and plot devices. The setting for the game demo, for example, parodies popular Nintendo games and consoles. The player starts out in the Pipe Fields, a large desolate wasteland where huge sewage pipes criss-cross the land, spewing their disgusting contents onto the once lush fields. The player will need to go down these pipes and travel through them to traverse the neglected level.

On the far end of the Pipe Fields, the player will enter Yuutopia, the "perfect" town that is the total opposite of the fields. In Yuutopia, conformity is a way of life, and the sterilization of the architecture and the people has resulted in an "ideal" society. The town is almost creepy in its overly-friendly atmosphere, similar to the Stepford Wives' fictional community. The town and its people parody the Wii, with its extreme emphasis on family-friendly fun and its clean-cut appearance and interface. With locations like Yuu Wear, Yuu Fitness, and Yuu Bowling, the message should be clear.

The game ends in the dark and abandoned museum that sits in the back corner of Yuutopia. Here the player finds all of the classic gaming characters, locked away in dungeons to make room for the new casual-gamer city of Yuutopia.
