Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Do I need to know Braille to apply?

No. You will learn how to read, write and teach Braille as part of the program.

2.  What kinds of field experiences does the program offer?

After completing field-based assignments in several courses, you will complete full-time student teaching experiences under the supervision of cooperating special education teachers and teachers of the blind/visually impaired.

3.  When I graduate, what will I be qualified to teach?

You will be certified to teach students who are blind/visually impaired K-12;, Special education preschool to grade 5 and middle school; Elementary education (K-5); High school in-class support; and/or Grades 6-12 (after certification testing in a specific content area)


4.  Does this program enable me to teach special education?
Yes. As part of the 5-year program, you will also be certified as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities.


5.  What is an itinerant teacher?

In New Jersey most students who are blind/visually impaired attend their neighborhood schools. Their educational needs are met by general education classroom teachers in cooperation with an itinerant teacher certified in teacher of the blind/visually impaired. The itinerant teacher provides specialized materials, consults with school personnel, and individualizes instruction in Braille and other blindness-related skills.
