Marylou Ramsey Ed. D.

Dr. Ramsey earned her B.A. in Psychology, with highest honors in Sociology, from Clark University in 1969, her M.A. in Counseling from Rider University in 1971, and her doctorate in Counseling and Educational Leadership from Farleigh Dickinson University in 1977. During her early professional career at the Clinton Correctional Institution, Dr. Ramsey worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker, an Assistant Social Work Supervisor, and the Director of Professional Services and Executive Director of Genesis, the first federally funded therapeutic community for incarcerated female drug offenders in the United States. As Director of Professional Services Dr. Ramsey developed, secured funding for, and administered all therapeutic grants and programs at the institution.

During 1975-1978 Dr. Ramsey worked at Northampton County Area Community College as Director of Special Programs and later Director of Student Development Services. Centralization of college counseling services to include non-traditional, career development, peer counseling and tutorial services were the result of her efforts. Supervision of staff development and administration of all supportive services grants were among her main responsibilities.

In 1978 Dr. Ramsey joined the Department of Counselor Education. She served as Graduate Program Supervisor, Developer and Coordinator of the Certificate in Gerontological Counseling Program from 1978-1981; Chair of the Department of Counselor Education 1981-1991; and CACREP School Counseling Program Coordinator from 1992-1996 and today. During her tenure Dr. Ramsey has taught Introduction to Counseling, Counseling Theory, Group Counseling, Group Leadership, Multicultural Counseling, Gerontological Counseling, Practicum Seminar and Clinical Internships. At present, she teaches Group Counseling, Multicultural Counseling, Practicum Seminar, and Clinical Internship. Prior to coming to The College of New Jersey, Dr. Ramsey also taught courses in psychology, group and individual dynamics, and criminal justice.

Dr. Ramsey's scholarly activities include 15 state or federal grants, over 25 refereed publications and more than 100 professional conferences and workshop presentations pertaining to such topics as: group and individual counseling; substance abuse counseling; multicultural counseling and training; professional and legal issues in counseling; gerocounseling; organizational management and development; student depression; and developmental school counseling. Her current research areas continue to focus on issues of diversity and multicultural counseling as well as the nature and level of scholarly productivity among counselor educators across the Untied States. Dr. Ramsey has advanced study in Gerontological Counseling, Group Psychotherapy, Marriage and Family Therapy, Vocational Exploration Programming, Staff Development Management, Rational Emotive Therapy and Grant Preparation. She is a National Certified Counselor, a National Certified School Counselor, holds New Jersey state certifications in Student Personnel Services and Director of Student Personnel Services, and is a member of the New Jersey Registry of Professional Counselors.

Throughout her career, Dr. Ramsey has assumed numerous professional leadership roles within her employing institutions as well as within state, regional, and national organizations and community advisory boards. Dr. Ramsey is currently a member of the American Counseling Association, the American School Counselors Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, the North Atlantic Regional Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the New Jersey Counselors' Association, and the New Jersey Association for Counselor Education and Supervision.

Reflective of her professional experiences and scholarly activities, Dr. Ramsey has been asked to serve as a professional consultant for many area schools, agencies, and regional organizations, and she is regularly cited in both national and international distinguished service and professional who's who directories for her continuing achievements in the fields of counseling and education.
