Mark S. Woodford, Ph.D.

Mark Woodford is an Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Counselor Education.  He joined the faculty in the fall semester of 2001. Dr. Woodford earned his bachelor of arts degree in fine arts and anthropology and his masters of education in agency counseling (with an emphasis in addictions counseling) from The College of William and Mary. He earned his doctorate in counselor education and supervision from the University of Virginia.

Dr. Woodford is a licensed professional counselor, a master addiction counselor, and a national certified counselor. He is a member of Chi Sigma Iota, the Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International, the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the International Association of Addictions and Offender Counseling, the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors, and the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors.

Dr. Woodford has extensive experience in addictions counseling, having worked as an addictions and dual diagnosis counselor at the Colonial Hospital and Recovery Center in Newport News, Virginia, and at Rehabilitation and Health, Inc., in East Boston, MA.  His dissertation research involved an investigation into the recovery process among undergraduate students struggling with drug and alcohol abuse.

Dr. Woodford is an active scholar who has conducted numerous presentations at state and national conferences in counseling. He has published articles in The Family Journal and The Clinical Supervisor, as well as several book chapters on substance abuse and men's issues.  He is currently writing a book on substance abuse among adolescent males and adult men.

Dr. Woodford teaches courses in addictions counseling and group counseling and he provides clinical supervision to practicum students. His office is located in 327 Forcina Hall and he can be reached by phone at (609)771-2119.
