Degree Program: Master of Arts in Counselor Education (CPSA)
The School Counseling option within the MA degree program in Counselor Education is designed to qualify eligible students for state certification in School Counseling at the elementary and secondary levels. Prior to the beginning of the program students attend an orientation and receive a Student Manual which details the curriculum, policies and procedures of the program. In addition, students attend a clinical orientation and receive a Clinical Manual prior to enrolling in the clinical sequence of the program in order to prepare them for this capstone experience.
CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS
In order to be a school counselor in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, students must be certified by the State Department of Education (DOE) Division of Certification in their state choice. As a CACREP approved school counseling program, the Department of Counselor Education at The College of New Jersey fully prepares students for New Jersey school counseling certification. In addition to fulfilling their degree program, students seeking school counseling certification in Pennsylvania must present evidence of their successfully passing the School Guidance and Counseling Praxis Test (20420) and a series of four Pre Professional Skills Test (PPST) in Reading (0710), Writing (0720), Math (0730), and Listening Skills (0740), all of which are administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS).
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania offers two, one at the elementary level and one at the secondary level. Separate applications are required for each level.
The State of New Jersey offers one level of (K-12) certification in school counseling.
