All teachers graduating from a teacher preparation program as well as individuals from out-of-state seeking NJ certification must achieve an intermediate or higher score on the Sign  Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI)* if they are applying for the NJ endorsement as a Teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing for Sign Language Communication.

FAQ's about the SCPI Assessment

1.  When should I take the SCPI?

Students may take the SCPI at any time.  Most students will want to take the test after completing ASL 101, 102, 103 and DHH 450.

2.  What happens if I do not achieve the minimum required score?

The SCPI may be taken an unlimited number of times.

3. Is the SCPI part of my course of study at TCNJ?

The SCPI is required by NJ certification not by the College.  Only those teacher candidates seeking employment is a sign language communication classroom must take the test.  Teacher candidates seeking the state endorsement as a Teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing for Oral/Aural Communication are not required to take the test.

4.  Where do I take the test?

The test is given at The Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf.  For information about the assessment, contact Mrs. Kim Arrigo at Kim_Arrigo@mksd.state.nj.us.

Mr. Ed Favor also administers the test.  He can be reached via email at edfaver@verizon.net

Please note that there is a fee for the test.

Additional testing centers are available in New York and in Pennsylvania.

*As of 2006, the SCPI has been renamed.  It is now know as the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI).
