Alternate Route to Special Education Certification Program

THERE IS A STATEWIDE SHORTAGE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS.  THIS SHORTAGE WILL ONLY BECOME MORE ACUTE IN THE FUTURE.  MAKE YOURSELF MORE MARKETABLE BY BECOMING CERTIFIED AS A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER.

An Innovative Approach

Do you have a bachelor’s or advanced degree and wish to teach students with disabilities?

Are you currently a certified teacher and have the desire to become certified as a Teacher of Students Disabilities?

If you answered YES to either of these questions, the College of New Jersey has a solution for you: the Alternate Route to Special Education Certification. This new approach allows you to become certified while teaching full-time in the classroom.

Program Highlights

The program permits you to teach students with disabilities immediately after taking a six credit sequence of knowledge about special education.

Concurrent with teaching fulltime, you will continue to take coursework at The College of New Jersey which will lead to certification as either:

  • Teacher of Students with Disabilities, Teacher of Elementary Education and a Masters of Arts in Teaching (Track One), or
  • Certification as Teacher of Students with Disabilities and a Masters of Education (Track Two).
