DESCRIPTION AND PREREQUISITES

This program is for experienced teachers (with a minimum of 3 years teaching experience) who already hold a Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field as well as prior certification in Special Education. This program leads to recommendation for certification as a Learning Disabilities Teacher/Consultant, the educational specialist on the child study team, mandated by the state of New Jersey. The program is comprised of a cluster of core courses that focus on key skills critical for the role of an LDTC such as the advanced study of learning disabilities, administration and scoring of assessment protocols, remediation and support strategies and an externship. Students are also required to take an elective that provides them an opportunity to explore a related area of interest.

Students applying to this program are required to have a Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field, a standard certificate in Special Education and at least three years of classroom teaching experience. This is a 27-credit program. 12 of these credits are prerequisite courses.

EXTERNSHIP

The LDTC externship is an experience that is to be completed towards the end of the program. Students are required to have completed the prerequisite courses for the externship as well as all required courses including SPED 624, SPED 680, SPED 681 & EPSY 643. Students can complete the externship “on the job”. Students completing the externship “on the job” need to have an assigned LDTC mentor on their site. All students applying for externship have to fill out the STEP application.

In addition to the above requirement, please refer to the STEP Guidelines and Policies for Student Teaching for additional details.
