Announcing a new 5-year MA degree in English!

The Department of English announces a new 5-year program leading to both BA and MA degrees for students majoring in English and Secondary Education.* This accelerated program will offer candidates the opportunity to graduate in 5 years with a BA in English, Secondary Teaching Certification in English (grades 6-12), and an MA in English. Enrolled students will benefit in many ways: with 10 graduate seminars, they will possess far more core content knowledge about literature, literary theory, and language; and with a graduate degree, they will be more competitive in local, regional, and national job markets. With just one extra year of study, future teachers can market themselves as “highly qualified” secondary school teachers of English and Language Arts.

Students must apply in the spring semester of their junior year, with an application deadline of March 1st.

Before applying, students must have completed 20 courses ( through their 5th semester), including required foundational literature courses and 2 upper-level (300- and 400-level) courses;  must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a 3.4 for English classes at TCNJ; and must pass all sections of the English Content exam in order to complete the degree.

Application requirements include: a completed application; 2 letters of recommendation (1 must be from a TCNJ faculty member); unofficial transcripts from TCNJ; and an essay.

Students applying for this program do not need to take GREs, and they do not have to pay an application fee.

Applicants will be notified by April 1st with admission decisions, in time for summer registration.

*Students in the English program who are not English/Secondary Education majors but who wish to apply for a 5-year Masters degree are qualified and able to do so, as well.
