English Department

The English liberal arts curriculum is designed to
provide intensive study in literature, language, and writing. The department also offers a professional track in secondary education, and one in journalism and professional writing, as well as minors in English, journalism, professional writing, and creative writing. Any of these programs can be meaningfully combined with majors or minors in such fields as history, psychology, modern languages, philosophy, elementary or early childhood education, and education of the deaf and hard of hearing.

Graduates of the English Department are a highly accomplished and energetic group. Each year, school districts in New Jersey, New York , and Pennsylvania hire dozens of teachers trained in the English Department, often commenting on the high level of preparation they have received. Other graduates have found an array of satisfying careers in publishing, advertising, media relations, the pharmaceutical and financial industries, and in both the state and federal government. Students trained in the Journalism/Professional Writing program are currently working for The Wall Street Journal , Bloomberg LP, MSNBC, Reuters, Capitol Hill, Elle, The Trenton Times, and many magazines and local newspapers. The English major is also an excellent preparation for graduate study. In recent years, our graduates have studied law at such schools as Georgetown, Yale, William and Mary, Michigan, and Rutgers. They have earned advanced degrees in language and literature at NYU, Princeton, UNC-Chapel Hill, Indiana, Maryland, and the University of Chicago.
