Results of the 1999 Engineering Alumni Survey

During the Fall 1999 semester, the department of engineering at The College of New Jersey mailed a questionnaire to 199 engineering alumni who graduated from the program in 1988 (52), 1993 (38), 1994 (35), 1995 (33), and 1998 (41). 41 alumni (20.6%) responded to the survey. The results of the survey are tabulated below.

Table 1. Average Response of the 1999 Alumni Survey

Years Out of School

# of Students That Responded Present Salary ($K) # That Have Attended Grad. School # Involved with Prof. Society Activities Passed FE Exam*
1 9 42.0 4 5 5
4 7 58.5 3 2 2
5 7 57.4 3 6 2
6 9 63.9 5 5 3
11 9 71.1 7 2 2

* It is not known how many students have actually taken the FE exam.

The alumni were also asked to rate their preparation at TCNJ in the following areas: Mathematics, Physical Sciences, General Education, Communications Skills, Engineering Currency, Engineering Competence, Engineering Design, Engineering Electives, Use of Modern Engineering Tools, and Team Participation. The alumni were asked to use the following scale to rate the list.

4: Better than needed for any job I have held
3: Good enough to meet most job requirement
2: Marginal – needed much additional study to make the grade
0: Very Poor – far below reasonable expectations – must be improved

Average alumni ratings for the areas surveyed are given in Table 2.
